As a child, I used to go to the movies regularly. In the summertime, my sister, cousins, and I would do chores just so my aunt would take us to the movies once a week. It was so much fun to get that big tub of popcorn, a drink, and candy, and go sit in a room and watch a movie on the big screen. I can remember that there used to be some sort of afternoon discount for the theaters that were advertised in the summer and that was usually when we went. But now as an adult and with the changes in new technologies and so many other aspects of going to the movies, I no longer go to the movies.
The Price You Pay When You Go to the Theater
One of the reasons that I no longer go to the theater anymore is because of the price. If I can recall correctly, it only cost at the most $15 to get a movie ticket, small drink, small popcorn, and a box of candy as a child. Now, it costs so much more. The last time I saw a movie at the movie theater was when The Avengers came out. It was the first time I had went to the movies in probably ten years. I was so excited to have that theater experience again, but that feeling faded once I had to pull out my wallet. For my husband and me, we each got one ticket, a bucket of popcorn, and a large soda (to share). I was shocked when I realized that for a night out at the movies, we had spent close to $50! We live on a very tight budget and all I could think about was all the other places we could have gone and spent $50. The prices have become so high at theaters that it is slowly becoming a less desired past time.
Another reason that I no longer go to the movies is because I own a 70 inch television, blue ray player, and have access to On Demand. There are also now movie rentals that can be delivered to your home like Netflix and easy DVD rental kiosks that make it easy to rent movies. With that being said, I can take the $50 that my husband and I spent at the theater, go rent a movie (or with On Demand, just order with a click of the remote), buy popcorn, and the same candy boxes that the theater has (for about $1 each), and watch the movies from the comfort of my home. The best part is that I do not have to pay for each of us to buy separate tickets. We mostly utilize the On Demand feature with our cable company and spend between $3.99 and $4.99 each movie that we can all watch!
The only two negatives of watching movies at home are that you do not get the theater “experience” and you usually have to wait a while before the movie is released, but I am okay with that. With On Demand, new movies are usually released every Tuesday and we have the option to order one or all of the new releases (depending on our budget) without having to keep going to the box office to buy more tickets. I also subscribe to Starz, HBO, and Encore with my cable company. These channels make my movie watching experience even better. Sometimes I see a movie come out that I think, “I wouldn’t mind watching that movie, but I don’t want to spend the money to see it”. With the movie channels offered by my cable company, I can watch the movies for free, even though I may have to wait a few months.
Watching Movies From Home Is so Convenient
The last reason I no longer go to the movie theater is because of the inconveniences that come with going to the theater. I live in a rural area and the closest theater to my home is over 30 miles away. That means that I have to drive a long distance to get there and let’s not forget the traffic! I also enjoy watching movies curled up on the couch with a blanket which is not possible in a theater. It is just so nice to be able to turn on my television, order a movie, and kick back and relax to watch a movie. Movie watching has become so much easier from home, and I for one am glad! My personal favorite thing about not going to the theater to watch a movie, I can watch it from home in my pajamas in the most comfortable fashion!
