The perfect jeans are not inherently coded into our DNA. As fashion trends progress, change, and revive, there are always more styles to choose from. Traditional jeans styles have been around since the 1950s or earlier. Bell bottoms hit the scene in the 1970s, and were reborn as flares in the 1990s. Jean cut options range from wide leg, to skinny jeans, and even include the recent resurgence of “mom jeans.” The wardrobe possibilities are endless, even before considering color and wash, versus standard blue denim.
So how do you choose the right pair of jeans? Trial and error is always an option. But if you don’t have hours to spend in the department store dressing room, here are some tips to consider when picking the right jean cut for you!
These are the most basic jeans flavor. Straight leg jeans offer a comfortable fit for most. The legs are cut at an even width. These jeans do not tighten or loosen down the length of the leg. These are great, casual jeans-perfect for relaxing or for playing.
These jeans are intended for wear over your favorite pair of boots. The leg is slightly flared at the bottom to accommodate medium height boots. The flair is subtle, not nearly as dramatic as bell-bottoms, or the bell-bottom revival, flares. This jean cut dresses up well with the right boots and a trendy top!
Also known as “baggy” jeans, the wide leg cut offers extra width down the entire length of the leg. These are extremely casual jeans.
Skinny jeans are snug from hip to ankle. There is very little give in skinny jeans, but they do accessorize well. Current trends include wearing scrunched leg-warmers or tall boots over your favorite pair of skinny jeans.
The expression “mom jeans” began primarily as a pejorative label for very high-waisted jeans. These jeans were not form-fitted, and were generally unflattering on the wearer’s bottom–including elongated, wider-set back pockets. However, mom jeans are surging, almost ironically, back into fashion. Urban Outfitters labels a “slouchy fit mom jean,” and Old Navy’s recent “fancy jeans” commercials appear to have a high-rise fit.
If you are searching for the perfect pants to match your jean-etic makeup, consider the style, cut, and occasion to narrow down your options! The perfect pair is out there!
