Writing a book is a difficult task, but when you add little experience and a full time job, it can be all but impossible. Try telling that to new author, DC Geiser. With little more than perseverance, an idea, and some good old fashioned imagination, Geiser not only will be releasing his first novel this upcoming May, but will also be publishing two more books with Joshua Tree Publishing.
In an interview with Geiser, it’s clear that his drive and passion were always in play towards his goal of creating his book, Hard Reign. In fact, it was that passion that helped to inspire the story line.
JB: “What was the inspiration behind Hard Reign?”
DG: “I imagine the answer to that would be similar to asking a question that we all ask ourselves at one point or another and that is ‘What is going to happen when I die or if I knew that I was dying what would my final thoughts be.’ I wrote a poem in 2004 entitled ‘Too Late to Think’ under the premise, if I had two minutes to live what would I think about. Seventeen pages later I had more raw data than I knew what to do with. I edited the piece down but it was something that always stuck with me and I wanted to build a world around that singular thought.”
With the raw information that Geiser had within himself, the rest became simply a matter of putting pen to paper. I couldn’t help but wonder if this was a path that Dave always wanted for himself or was writing something that he fell into by inspirational accident.
JB: “Did you always know that you wanted to write? How did your career lead you to this book?”
DG: “Originally, I was a musician. The extent of my writing was lyrics from verse to chorus and playing guitar. It wasn’t until 2002 when Stone Sour released their first album and the very last track was a spoken word piece recited by Corey Taylor called ‘Omega’. I was hypnotized and listened to it over and over until it hit me like lightning. I had a lot to say all bottled in my gut and I knew writing would be my vessel.”
Clearly, DC Geiser was an artistic creature striving to use the written word as an outlet. Showcasing his need for creativity, Geiser began to envision a character that used words to narrate life in prose. When asked if his main character, Damian, was built from personal connection his reply was simply “Let’s just say Damian and I may have a lot in common.”
Hard Reign is a deeply committed novel with an emphasis on raw human emotion. Throughout the story it is clear that the characters develop from connection and life experience. The mixture between poetry and dialogue create an interesting genre that is different than most novels being showcased.
JB: “Why did you choose this particular genre?”
DG: “I am obsessed with the mind. The way it works, the way it powers us. The processes of decision making and a world full of personalities both good and evil. From the way it can actually work against us or have all the tumblers fall into place at the last moment. To harness that power and invent or neglect and watch it eat us from the inside out, I want to grab an emotion and have it lift from the page. I want the reader to feel as though they were with me throughout.”
JB: “What inspired the poetry in the book? Was it based on emotions that were built with your characters?
DG: “The book was actually inspired by poetry and a lesson my son and I learned together. We were having a conversation over dinner and I was explaining that nothing in life is out of reach. We simply have to find our way to get whatever it is that we want. I told him, if you want something, thanyou have to go after it because great things in life want to be acquired. He paused, and with such childlike honesty asked, ‘Didn’t you want to write a novel?'”
With the parental pressure to move forward and a commitment to himself, Geiser used his creative energy when time afforded it.
JB: “As a working author, how did you find time to complete your book and maintain your work and daily responsibilities?”
DG: “For me, creativity peaks in the middle of the night, once everyone is asleep. After the daily grind, then time with my son, once all goes quiet I slip into my chair with some good music and an endless cup of coffee. Needless to say I have trained myself to function with little sleep. I will have enough time for that when I’m dead.”
With the first book slated to be released in May, DC Geiser has broken the barrier between pipedream writer and published author. With hard work and maybe a little luck, Geiser’s foundation has been set for the next stage of his writing career. Undoubtedly, the process was intimidating yet for some, publishing never happens. Geiser not only found a publisher to print his first book, Joshua Tree Publishing has put so much faith in his skills that they are already committed to publishing two more additional books in the Hard Reign series.
JB: “How was the process for you? Did you ever doubt that your publishing moment would come?”
DG: “I have been fortunate to have met, befriended, and become family with some amazing people that gave me more motivation and inspiration than I ever could have imagined. I would be lying if I said the process was simple because that is not the case. However, there was never a moment where I felt beaten. The process can be daunting. For me, I ran into people that had no interest in my novel but were far more inspired by the all mighty dollar. That is another reason I am grateful to Joshua Tree Publishing as they have been so protective and nurturing to not just me but also Hard Reign.“
JB: “What is the single most important thing that you have learned from this experience?”
DG: “First and foremost, writing a book and getting it published are two very different beasts. The writing process was exciting and even though with ‘Hard Reign’, having a skeleton of how I needed the story to go. I got to watch it evolve, have epiphanies, and even provoke my own emotion just through trying to live inside my characters. On the other side, being a first time author, the publishing process was a battle. Leather skin is a prerequisite and viewing yourself as a brand is mandatory. I feel very fortunate to have Centar Books and Joshua Tree Publishing sharing my vision for Hard Reign.”
JB: “Now that Hard Reign is being released, how will the next book progress?”
DG: “I cannot say too much, but I can say it will progress in a series of words strung from left to right, read top to bottom, separated by punctuation, and potentially reminiscent of something familiar. I will meet you there.”
In true writer fashion, DC Geiser has created a buzz that has us waiting listlessly for the next installment. The pure nature of his story and the emotion that has been enveloped in it’s being is truly a gift to readers looking for something new and exciting.
JB: “What does the future hold for you as an author?”
DG: “Hard Reign is inception and I’m just getting started. The follow up is in the making. To make no mention of the countless tales running the spectrum of emotions that I have in store for anyone brave enough to come along for the journey.”
Look for Hard Reign to fulfill your need for emotion, depth, fear, human nature, and above all passion. Like the book itself, the author has brought to life a new path with clear determination by taking a leap of faith in himself and his words. DC Geiser has conquered any obstacles towards sharing his words with the world and became an accomplished author in the process.
