Over the course of time, video games have developed from simple games, such as Pac-man, with characters eating dots to stay alive and trying to out-run ghouls, to real-life scenarios and violence, such as Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto. There have also been many sports video games that have become wildly popular over the years. Here are the top five video game sports franchises of all time based on various sources and popularity ratings:
This popular video game has sold over 70 million units since it was first developed. It is very similar to an actual football game as there is an on-the-field action mode, as well as a training camp mode and a management mode. The game also features a sports commentator and player statistics, just like in a real game of football. This series is the best-selling EA Sports Series in the United States. The series started in 1988, and there has been at least one new release every year since then.
These games mimic a real-life game of five different sports: tennis, bowling, golf, baseball, and boxing. By simply holding the Wii controller in your hand, you are transformed to a tennis court, football stadium, or boxing ring. This motion-sensing game also features training and fitness modes, and is a great way to workout without actually having to physically go anywhere! This game outsold the ever-popular Super Mario Brothers, making it one of the top-selling sports games in the nation.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
This game lets you master skateboard tricks and has a career mode, a create-a-skater option, a multiplayer mode, and create-a-park mode. This video game is great for everyone, even those people who couldn’t ride a skateboard if their lives depended on it. The game is rated on how well you successfully master jumps and spins. There is also a free-skate mode, where there is no time limit like there is in career mode.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour
This game appeals to every golfer, and has 25 professional golfers to choose from when playing. This video game is much better than golf games of old, and has gotten high ratings for it’s realistic on-the-course action. This game can be played with friends off or online in multi-player mode.
An oldie but goodie, this game is all about boxing, and the later series featured Mike Tyson in the game. Watch out when playing- you might get your ear torn off and eaten! There have been several re-makes of this popular series throughout the years, and it has been a fan favorite for quite some time for a good reason- it’s just so fun to play! The key to winning the boxing match is to learn how your opponent fights and to avoid their attacks with moves learned over time when playing the game.
These days, sports video games aren’t just for men. Women are getting in on the action as well, and today you can play just about any virtual sport via video game. My personal favorite to play is Bowling and Tennis for the Wii. Check out the following websites to see which of your favorite games come in at the top:
