The “Cat Eye,” eyeliner look, also called winged eyeliner, is an extremely popular way to wear eyeliner. The right tools and the right product can help you achieve the look with a little practice. As a fashionista and makeup addict, I have purchased and tried many black eyeliners in the past searching for the right one. Here are my picks, and some tips, for how to do the elusive cat eye.
If you are a beginner, a pencil liner is the easiest way to draw a cat eye. Draw your usual line across your eyelid and draw a small triangle at the outside corner of your eye. Simply fill in the lines with your pencil and you’re done. Pencils are the easiest way to control how dramatic the line is and how dark you want the makeup to be. I use pencils when I’m in a rush and don’t have time to focus on precision or use extra tools to achieve my cat eye. An eyeliner marker is an easy way to get the look of liquid eyeliner with more precision and control. They also tend to be very rich in color and you can purchase them at a variety of price points. When I first started wearing cat eye liner, I used an eyeliner marker. Draw your line on your lid and with a gentle, short flicking motion, flick upward on the outer corner. Once you get your desired length, fill in the line to make it more bold. Splurge: Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Eyeliner in Intense Black Save: NYX Super Fat Eye Marker in Black
Gel and Cream Eyeliner
Gel and cream eyeliners can be used to make a cat eye using an angled brush. Dip your brush in then sweep across your eyelid to your desired thickness. It can be tricky at first to make the lines even, but if you go slowly you have more control over the line. Draw a triangle at the outer corner of your eye like you would a pencil and fill in carefully. Make sure you don’t blink too soon, or you could smudge the cream or gel as it dries. I like using gel eyeliner when I need a product that will last all day and not wear off. Splurge:Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eyeliner in Deep Black Save: Wet N’ Wild Creme Eyeliner in Black
Liquid eyeliner is the trickiest one of the bunch to achieve a cat eye. It can take a lot of practice and mess ups before you get it right. I like to use an eyeliner brush that is thin or one that comes with the eyeliner. Dip the brush in the product and slowly sweep a line across your lid. I like to sometimes make a string of dots across my eye then fill them in with a solid line. Carefully flick the brush at the corner of the eye and fill in with more liner. Make sure you leave your eye open for awhile to let the eyeliner set. Splurge: Benefit Magic Ink in Jet Black Save: Revlon Color Stay in Blackest Black
Once you’ve picked your product, you can start practicing your cat eye. Keep a good eye makeup remover on hand for if you slip up to correct your mistakes. In a pinch, you can even use olive oil to remove your excess makeup. It took me a few tries to get it right, so don’t be discouraged if you have to try over and over. The hot runway look you achieve at the end will be worth all the practice.
