Hating on gays is one thing, and I realize that most Christians no longer do that, but what about the other unseen damages that these and many other types of “bad Christian” folk are doing to members of our society?
First of all, I should mention that I am not anti-christian, anti-religious, anti-theist or anything of the sort. I am, however, against those few religious zealots who do nothing for their cause but instead hurt others and turn them away from the Christian message of love, peace and hope.
First off, there’s the “hate the sin, love the sinner ” Christians. These types of Christians claim that being gay is not okay but that everyone is a sinner and they love gay people anyways. Now, do you really believe they would be preaching an anti-gay message if they loved gay people? They openly oppose gay marriage but they claim to support the community? In my opinion, these Christians are simply looking for a way to exorcise their hatred without bringing about too much retaliation upon themselves.
Next we have the judgmental Christians, possibly one of the worst types. These are usually older people who always sit in the front of the pew. Yes, I’m talking about the “holier than thou” Christians. They claim to be the end all be all when it comes to all things Christianity-related, even though they never took a theological course in their lives and most never even finished high school. They sit amongst themselves after church and enjoy gossiping about all the people they see as sinners. “That young fellow was all tattooed, he must be of the devil!” or “Old Jimmy was out drinking last night, his soul is going straight to hell!” are common insulting phrases you’ll hear from these ignorant Christians.
Lastly, we have the pretend Christians. These are the Christians who are only pretending to be Christians. Now, I know you thought this article was going to be about only the zealous, but the lukewarm Christians are almost as bad. They pretend to heed the word of God while blatantly opposing him in all that they do. They pick and choose which Bible passages they see fit to follow, and they bring good Christians a bad name. Although they may not damage society in general, these bad Christians damage their own religious society, and since in my mind we are a world united, they are damaging our world as a whole.
As a word of warning, don’t get caught up being one of the Christians I listed above. Instead, follow what you believe to be true while respecting the people around you, and always remember, Jesus’ first commandment was love thy neighbor as thyself.
