If you’re like me and you love a good story filled with raucous kicking rock’n’roll and R&B music MEMPHIS is the show for you. I was lucky enough to see it last year as it debuted in South Florida. It did not disappoint on any count. It was fun, touching, poinyent, and a musical raise-the-roof barn burner. You just can’t get any better than that.
The story of the show takes place in the underground dance clubs of the 1950’s in Memphis, Tennessee. Inspired by actual events, a white radio DJ (Huey) sets out to change the world while trying to help a black club singer (Felicia) who is ready for her big break. Eventually a mutual attraction comes to light as the couple fight against the world’s prejudice view as well as family discord and unacceptance. So the big question remains: does love truly conquer all? Well, I guess you’re just going to have to see the show to find out. MEMPHIS is an incredible journey that plays out on the radio airwaves and beyond.
Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards® including Best Musical, MEMPHIS , which played pre-Broadway at the La Jolla Playhouse, features a Tony®-winning book by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) and a Tony®-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan. Directing is Tony® nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu), and choreography is by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys). So come along for the ride of the year and get ready to experience Broadway’s most exciting new destination~ what AP calls “The very essence of what a Broadway musical should be.” For more information on this kicking show please visit the following sites:
