WWE will present Wrestlemania 30 on April 8th, 2014. The showcase of the immortals, Wrestlemania is the event that all in the industry plead to be a part of. It’s the Super Bowl of professional wrestling. Throughout its past, Wrestlemania has produced many bouts that will go down as some of the all time best. In celebration, here are the five greatest matches in Wrestlemania history.
Hulk Hogan Slams a Giant
Perhaps the greatest match in the Wrestlemania catalog. This match is not recalled for the pure athletic performance of its combatants, but rather, the cultural significance. Hulk Hogan was at his peak popularity, his likeness engrained in Americana. Andre was also riding a wave of celebrity, a real life giant who was the definition of intimidation. The two drew over 93,000 screaming fans to the Pontiac Silverdome for Wrestlemania 3. The climax of the bout came when Hogan body slammed the giant, and pinned him to retain his championship. The bout personifies everything that was the new cartoon generation of wrestling. It defined sports entertainment.
The Streak and the Heartbreak Kid
Both Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker have been a part of some classic Wrestlemania landmarks. After all, their careers span across 22 of them. But it wasn’t until Wrestlemania 25 that these two legends crossed paths on the biggest stage of them all. The battle was brutal and emotional. The two men pulled out all their tricks, a true campaign of one-upmanship. In the finale, The Undertaker was able to preserve his undefeated streak. But the two men walked away as winners, equal participants in an illustrious contest.
A Match Before its Time
The Intercontinental Championship match between Macho Man Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat was a confrontation infused with high spots and false finishes, so much so that the bout was light years ahead of its time. Although over shadowed by the main event, Savage and Steamboat stole the show with their quick performance and feats of athletics. It became the design for countless Wrestlemania matches for years to come.
The First of Three Matches
The Rock and Steve Austin have a rivalry unlike any other. The duo has main evented two Wrestlemanias, and co-main evented another one. However, it was their first Wrestlemania collision that produced the most magic. Two young lions in the prime of their careers, scuffling to prove to the world that they are the best in the wrestling business. And they were.
Good Friends, Better Enemies
This very underrated and often overlooked bout took place at Wrestlemania eight in the Hoosier Dome. The feud was built around the Intercontinental Championship and the real life friendship between Piper and Hart. The two started off with some classic wrestling maneuvers, but it unexpectedly twisted into a bloody fight. On an event that featured Hulk Hogan’s retirement, and Macho Man’s second title win, it would be courageous to hijack the show. But they easily did just that.
With legends like Ultimate Warrior and Jake Roberts scheduled to appear, plus matches featuring today’s superstars like Daniel Bryan and John Cena, Wrestlemania 30 is bound to be the biggest celebration of all time. And if history is any inclination, we could see the birth of another greatest match of all time.
