I have been using memory foam for years and know that when you first get it that it can have an odor from the foam that takes awhile to go away. The Target Home Brand Memory foam comes with what they call a Green Tea Scent to help mask the normal odor of the foam. Frankly I have had a lot of Green Tea in my life and have never had any that smell like what is in this memory foam mattress topper. Over all it’s still a good product but they should lose the mint and just go back to telling you to air it out for a couple days before putting it on your bed.
Description and our Experience
The Basics: The mattress topper comes with a nice zippered case and has holes punched in it to help keep you cool. The memory foam is 2″ thick and claims to be hypoallergenic.
Size Choices: It comes in Twin, Full, Queen and King. We got the queen sized topper which measured 58.5″ x 78.5″ x 2″ These were the measurements on the box I did not measure the actual topper but it fit great on my bed. The instructions said that it would be slightly smaller than the mattress but I felt this was pretty close to the exact size of our mattress. I have in the past bought memory foam that has been a lot smaller than the mattress, so this one is just a tiny bit smaller so that it will not hang over the mattress at all.
The Zippered Cover: One of the deciding factors in buying this particular topper was the fact that it came with a fabric case with a zipper to protect the memory foam. Some cases have a really soft top almost like a plush feel. This case was just made from a synthetic fabric and had a zipper on three sides. The case was constructed to give room for the height around the edges of the case. So when zipped up the case is the exact size as the mattress topper. I could not detect a top or bottom to the case so I chose to use the side with the zipper at the bottom as the side that went closest to the mattress. The case is well made and the zipper worked easily. The fabric is soft and feels cottony with a good weight to it. It felt much like a good quality soft cotton sheet even though it was made from synthetic fabric.
The Packaging: The topper comes in a box and is compressed in plastic and rolled up. I did not think that the box was too heavy of difficult to handle. It had side openings to allow me to pick it up and put it in my cart and also made it easier to put in the car. It actually just fit in my trunk. The box is 15″wide x 15″deep x 16″ high.
Set Up: The set up could not be easier. According to the directions in the box we were told to set it up right on the bed. I laid out the zipper cover on the bed so that the zipper edge was on the bottom so it would not poke us through the sheet. The zipper goes on three sides and the closed end is on one side of the bed. I was careful to lay it out evenly so we would not have to move it much once we got the memory foam in the case.
Next we followed the instructions and carefully removed the plastic and let the memory foam roll out right on the bed. We did not need scissors to cut the plastic and it came out easily and unrolled quickly. The instructions stated that it could take up to an hour for the mattress topper to attain it’s full shape. We thought that it came out to its full size almost immediately. Compared to other mattress toppers that seemed to take a long time to get their shape this one performed great.
All I did next was fold the loose end of the cover on top and then zip it up. It was not too hard to zip with the queen size but the king size might be a big of a challenge.
After the topper was in the case we shifted it slightly to make sure it was evenly on the bed. Then we put our fitted sheet on top and made the bed. Through it all I was noticing the scent and was not sure if it was going to be an issue or not.
The Scent, Odor, Smell: I noticed the scent right away when we opened the plastic but it got stronger with time. The box calls it a green tea scent that is in place to help minimize the odor from the foam. I did not detect any foam odor but maybe that was because the green tea scent was so strong. Frankly I have never smelled green tea that smelled like this mattress topper. The scent resembles an after dinner mint. I think they might be called butter mints. It was not unpleasant but not something I want to sleep with or smell like when I get out of bed. The instructions said that an odor might be present that would tak 48 hrs to go away. It has been at least 4 days and the odor while getting less invasive is still there. It was so strong the first night that after sleeping I took the sheets off the bed and washed them as they smelled like mint. I left the cover open for the whole day with the ceiling fan going in the room. I put the bed back together and we have just left the covers open, rather than making the bed up each day. I have noticed the smell is way less but it is still there and I will be glad when it is gone completely.
Frankly I would rather smell the foam than this strong mint and my suggestion would be to let the mattress topper air out in a room until the smell goes away before putting it on your bed. I think they definitely went a little overboard on the scent and they should call it mint scent not green tea.
Comfort: I love the way this memory foam feels. When you lay down on it you feel so comforted and relaxed by it. Once you get used to sleeping on a memory foam topper you will never want to sleep without it. I know that some mattresses come with a memory foam layer on top but frankly those mattress’ are the most expensive and I would prefer to buy a cheaper more basic mattress and spend the extra money on the mattress topper. My reasoning is that it is cheaper and also that memory foam breaks down over time and your mattress will likely last longer than your memory foam. With the topper I can just replace that and not have to buy a whole new mattress.
I think that the 2″ layer of memory foam is about perfect. 1.5″ will work too, an inch is too thin. Any thicker than 2″ and it seems like it raised the bed up too far and you really do not gain anything in comfort but adding the extra level. This memory foam is the perfect depth and feels really comfortable.
One thing that is different about this memory foam than others I have had in the past is that it is punched with holes which are supposed to make you feel cooler. I have never had an issue with memory foam making me feel hot so I do not detect any difference. I would think that the holes really do not breathe though because they are blocked off on one side completely with the mattress, not to mention that they are covered with the sheet. Regardless the Target Home Cool Comfort Memory Foam Mattress Topper is extremely comfortable.
Cost and Value: We paid $129 for our queen sized Target Home Cool Comfort Memory Foam Mattress Topper. This seemed reasonable to me and gave our older mattress a new life. Much cheaper than buying a new mattress!
Warranty: The Target Home Cool Comfort Memory Foam Mattress Topper comes with a 7 year warranty. In order to have it replaced you would have to send it back to the address on the paper inside the box. It is not warrantied for misuse of course but says it should stand up to normal use.
Warnings: Memory Foam is flammable so please be smart when using it and anything like a lighter or electric blanket. You can use electric blankets just make sure it is in perfect working order.
Final thoughts and Rating
I would probably give The Target Home Cool Comfort Memory Foam Mattress Topper 5 stars but have to knock off a star for the scent situation. Yes it disappears over time but I feel that number one it is mint and not green tea and number two they should tell you to air it out before putting it on your bed unless you like sleeping with Mint. The thing is so comfortable though and was a great size that fit my bed perfectly so it redeems itself on those points. Also the fact that it was so easy to put on the bed and attained its full size and shape so quickly gave it a few extra points.
