Michael took a few minutes out of his extremely busy day to talk about business and the fact that several of his artists will be appearing and performing as well as signing autographs in a booth at the CMA Festival from June 5th through the 8th this year. I also wanted to get some insight into his management company and this is what he had to say.
Q How cool is it that you have your artists performing in several showcases in Nashville this year either at or during the CMA Festival I hear?
A Yeah, I am excited about it. It is a great opportunity for them to show Nashville what they can do. They are all very talented singers, songwriters, musicians and it’s going to be a great 3 days of fun music.
Q So how long have you been doing this?
A I started MTS almost 5 years ago.
Q Why did you decide to do this? I know that you’re a musician yourself and a songwriter.
A I kind of fell into it by happenstance. Everything happens for a reason and it has truly been a blessing to me and my family. I was in a band for years and had been good friends with a guy in that rock band. He ended up going country to quote Alan Jackson.
We hooked back up after being apart for quite a few years. We had lost touch and after he went to Nashville and recorded his album he came back home and looked me up. We hooked up again and started writing together and he had this great album but nothing was happening with it. It just baffled me. I said you have this great product, why aren’t you doing anything with it?
Q Well, he didn’t know what to do with it so I went on a search for managers for him. We had a few bites, picked a few brains and got some ideas of what it actually took to attract a manager, attract a label, to get people on your team that are able to further a career. We had a conversation with a wise man that was in the business for years who told us that this guy had a great CD but that was only part of the picture. Yeah you can sing but where is your social media at? Where are you live gigs at? What else are you doing besides having this great CD? From that point on I turned to the guy and I said let me manage you. Let me take it from here and see what I can do? From there I got another client that I had known from the past that liked what I was doing with the first artist. He said I need somebody to do that for me. I’d like to come on board so then there was two.
Q And then there were 3 and then there was 4 and so on and so forth. [Laughter]
A Yes, it snowballed.
Q Well it does. People see other people’s success and then they think, hey I want a piece of that. Whoever is getting all this press and radio air play for this artist, I want them to do this for me too.
A That’s pretty much what has happened. It has been a lot of word of mouth. Praise GOD, I am blessed. I don’t have to go out and try to find artists. They are finding me. That’s really makes me feel good as a publicist and a manager and now as a label to have that capability where your name is getting out there and people are admiring you. It is great that people are taking notice of what you are doing and what your artists are doing. That is why I always tell my artists, if you succeed, I succeed. It’s a big team effort here. It has just been amazing.
Q You have a big artist showcase happening during the CMA Festival at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel hosted by Lee Rascone?
A Yes and that is going to be a very special night of showcases by: Amy Rose, Marshall Dane, Matt Williams, Alyssa Morrissey and Doug Briney.
We talked in much greater detail about the business and the showcase. The MTS Artist Showcase is happening on June 5th at 6:00 p.m. central time at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel hosted by Lee Rascone. It is a free show so people in town for the CMA Festival can get out of the heat and into air-conditioning to watch the MTS Artists rising stars.
