Right out of the gate I am going to make a huge statement by saying, “Make Love Tonight.” is going to be a hit song. I listen to new songs everyday and this one grabbed me by the heart and brought me back to so many great moments in my life. That is what a hit song is supposed to do. It is supposed to take you for a ride back in time and help you feel all those emotions you felt back then. This song accomplishes that and then some.
Many times, before I interview music artists, authors, or any other subject, I have to do research. Sometimes I am furnished biographies, previous pieces written about the interview subject, a book, if the interviewee is an author and music if the interviewee is a recording artist.
I was one of the privileged few to receive a copy of, “Make Love Tonight,” written by Matt Williams, Alyssa Morrissey, Doug Folkins and Adam Newcomb. This song was recorded by Canadian music artists Matt Williams and Alyssa Morrissey. Matt & Alyssa usually do their own things musically but the stars aligned to bring them together to create this gem.
Matt took a few minutes out of his very busy day to speak with me yesterday.
Q Matt, I have to tell you, “Make Love Tonight,” really moved me. I am also a songwriter and I wish I had written this song.
A Oh nice. Well thank you. That’s a huge compliment.
Q It’s a great song. Your management MTS Management Group furnished me a copy of it and I have listened to it over and over again. It does not get old.
A That’s always a good thing; you don’t want your song to get old fast. You want them to have a long shelf life.
Q Well yeah! I think it’s a hit song.
A Wow, wow, thank you, thanks. We are really excited.
Q Hit songs are ageless. They don’t have an expiration date.
A Yeah, that’s right. We were aiming for that. Country music is pretty new to me in the last ten to twelve years. I was a fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers growing up and he has a lot of country influence. I always loved bands like Def Leppard and that Bon Jovi arena rock so that was something that we were really going for. We wanted that, those chords that hit hard like those bands I grew up loving. I think we came close on this song. We are really excited about it.
Q So you have a different kind of thing going on because you normally perform with a band right?
A Yes, that is right. So my band Western Avenue, we have had some success up here in Canada and down in the states as well. We were just in one of those in between phases where we weren’t releasing the next single. For me music drives me and I constantly have to be busy and doing something. I never really sit still. I needed to get back in the studio and do this. Initially the plan with this song was to go in and demo it and maybe try to shop it around and see how things go that way but halfway through the recording process I was like oh wow, we are actually really doing great with this song. Like I said, Western Avenue wasn’t really releasing anything at that time so I was like you know, maybe I will just throw it out there on my own and I love to travel and do that. So I will be able to travel behind this song and the switch is going to be a lot of fun.
Q Right and you are going to be at the CMA Festival?
A Yes. Yeah, we are pretty happy about that. We are doing three shows while we are down there and just networking. This will actually be my second trip to Nashville this year. We were down in February, I and Alyssa were down there just making great connections and taking the whole scene in. So we are excited to get back and do some playing this time. It is going to be fun.
Q Well if mainstream radio doesn’t pick up this song, it’s crazy. This song is better than anything I have heard on the radio in a year.
A Oh thanks. Like I said that is always a huge compliment to hear that and sometimes you don’t know how that happens. Hopefully, we did a good job. I think the emotion comes across in this song too. We wanted it to be a little bit risky almost and kind of push the envelope a little bit.
Q It does that but its border. It sits on the fence, it is kind of like it’s almost like I believe that someone rather than being fully nude out there, a person is sexier when they still have something on.
A Exactly, yeah, yeah. It leaves more to the imagination.
Q Exactly and that’s what this song does.
A Yeah. That’s great and that is what we were going for. We wanted to put those hot words in there but also kind of leave a lot to the imagination.
Q Right, it’s sensual but it never crosses the line into raunchy, never.
A Yeah, exactly.
Q You are going to get asked this question a lot. Is there something going on between you and Alyssa romantically?
A I will leave it at this. We like spending a lot of time together and we have a great chemistry musically going forward. We are travel buddies. We are on the road a lot, we do a lot of shows together and yeah, I think less is more in that question.
Q Absolutely. The chemistry between the two of you is remarkable and people are going to hound you about that so be ready.
A I am sure.
Q You two definitely have chemistry. The way you write together, the way your voices blend and you can hear the passion in the song.
