When I think of the history of video games and how the content and graphic has developed unbelievably since the 1980s, I cannot help but think of one of the original characters. That character is none other than Super Mario. From eating mushrooms which aided in his growth and strength, to utilizing a leaf that enabled him to fly to unprecedented heights, everybody’s favorite Italian has managed to remain in our hearts for nearly a quarter of a century.
Mario was a super hero in his own right. Of course, you had your Batman, Spider Man, and Super Man, but this guy was the most courageous. While other super heroes would attract the damsels in distress by there muscularity and sporting their fancy costumes, Mario managed to capture the heart of the princess while wearing a Tom Selleck like mustache and a pair of old plumber overalls. His rather large nose and short, stocky complex proved to America that an average looking guy still had the power to get a princess.
I remember as a child coming home from school and before even considering my homework, I was fixated on conquering the levels to the infamous Super Mario World games. The addiction with transporting through pipes, and dodging koopa shells, in hopes to rescue the princess became an adrenaline rushing thrill.
We have seen him in Paper Mario, Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario World, and many more games. Mario has actually been around since 1981 and proved to grow strong ever since. Although the franchise has evolved immensely since then, my all time favorite Mario game would have to be the original Super Mario World made for Super Nintendo.
Not only has he engaged in battle with Bowser and survived fire shooting piranha plants, but he apparently he is big on recreational sports. Mario was also known for playing tennis, participating in the Olympics, riding go-carts in Mario Cart, and even playing golf. Mario had his own golf game before Tiger Woods was even playing golf.
Forget Tony Soprano, Mario is the original Italian that you do not want to mess with. The worlds beloved plumber has captured our attention with his distinctive voice and his desire to conquer any sport. I have only questioned why there has never been a Mario wrestling game.
