The Sunny California Soap Company is a boutique maker of a wide range of wonderful quality soaps targeted at all soap users, women, men, and even pets. The soaps are all natural and lightly fragranced with high-quality essential oils. Their Old Fashioned Shaving Cream Soap is right in line with the rest of their products, as high quality soap, this time targeted to the wet shaver.
With the resurgence of wet shaving, a large variety of product has hit the market, aimed squarely at the man who prefers a traditional blade over the expedience of more modern shaving devices. Fundamental to a perfect shave is a rich lather created by lathering a cake of soap that is rich in oils. The thick lather protects the face from nicks and it holds water in suspense, providing lubrication between the blade and the face, and offering a smooth, close shave. Though shaving soaps are becoming more readily available, the price of the good ones remains high, and products marketed as “premium” quality soaps have actually climbed in price. The Sunny California Old Fashioned Shaving Cream Soap is an in incredible bargain, coming in at $10 per cake for a very high-end product.
This is not a cake type of soap, but is a bit softer and creamier. As a result it comes packaged in its own container, broad and flat enough to get a build a good lather. Because this is not a mass-produced soap, but, rather, a fine hand-made product, it is necessary that it be allowed to dry and that it be kept that way when not in use. The creamy soap produces a lather that is unparalleled in soaps that are far more expensive. The aroma is a pleasant eucalyptus-spearmint, done with Sunny California’s typical understatement. It is a wonderful fragrance to wake up with, though I miss my Bay Rum and lime aromas sometimes-I harbor hopes that Sunny California will expand their shaving soap line to include a few more options.
Being a consummate shaving soap experimenter, I was very pleased to discover this marvelous product made locally out of old-fashioned and natural ingredients. Variety of scent aside, this is my hands-down favorite shaving soap, comparing favorably to soaps that cost four times as much, and more. The oil-rich soap does not dry the skin, despite the glycerin content, and it protects your baby face delightfully.
Those of us fortunate enough to live in Folsom can find Sunny California’s Old Fashioned Shaving Cream Soap at the local Historic Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings. They also make appearances at other local farmers’ markets in the greater Sacramento region. Those who live farther away may find their shaving soap at their Facebook shop or at their Etsy shop. If you don’t see the shaving soap listed, ask TerriLin for it, and she will send it along.
