Adult biosocial development is related to the aging process and heath. As we become older the signs of aging become more visible, which is known as senescence. The first changes are in the skin because our collagen levels decrease. Aging also affects hair growth; it becomes thinner and eventually turns gray. There is also a physical decline in the muscles: they weaken and also are less flexible. All the senses are affected by aging. The brain also ages along with the rest of our body. Some of the time its speed up by drug abuse, excessive stress, poor circulation and viruses. Some women have to assisted reproductive technology in order to have children because of in fertilization sometimes caused by disease or waiting to late to have children. This is because of menopause which stops ovulation.
Drug use really affects biosocial development in a negative way because it causes poor health. Tobacco use causes lung cancer which is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Alcohol use is destroys brain cells and contributes to infertility and causes a series of health problems. One thing that surprised me was that in the U.S. people who are HIV positive live an average of three years longer than moderate drinkers and six years longer than heavy drinkers. Good health and good nutrition is important. It helps the signs of aging become less apparent.
Cognitive development in adulthood relates to intelligence and the brain maturing. There are different forms of intelligence. General intelligence refers to all cognitive abilities. Charles Spearman came up with the term g. In the earlier years people thought intelligence reached a peak at 21 and then decreased slowly after. However many studies proved that idea wrong. The newer generation has more education than the older ones and that was one of the causes of younger people seeming to be smarter. The Flynn effect by James Flynn found that the average IQ is increasing. The two clusters of IQ are Fluid intelligence and Crystallized intelligence. Fluid intelligence is basically speed thinking and abstract thought. It’s more intelligence having to do with your short term memory. Crystallized intelligence is an accumulation of facts and information; This is more long term memory. There is also analytic, creative and practical intelligence founded by Robert Sternberg.
Psychosocial development has to do with relationships and stages of adulthood. Erikson came up with four different stages. Identity vs. Role diffusion which is identity concerns involving sex, gender, work, political etc. Intimacy vs. Isolation meaning we seek close relationships. Isolation usually occurs in death and divorce. Generatively vs. Stagnation which are adults taking care of the older generation. Finally Integrity vs. Guilt which concerns helping humanity.
