Markers, stickers, and/or other supplies
String or cord
Has your little girl ever made sugar cube necklaces? No? Good; it will make a great project for her and her friends to do at her birthday party or at a sleepover. You won’t need to purchase a huge amount of craft supplies. Just get a box or two of sugar cubes, as well as a few other things, and lay it all out on a table. The girls will have a wonderful time getting creative with costume jewelry. Each child will be able to create a wearable, fashionable necklace, which is also a party favor, and an adorable keepsake.
Sugar cubes have shapes like wooden beads and, although they are unusual beads, they look fabulous when turned into necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry pieces. Besides the sugar cubes, you’ll need string or cord, paint and small brushes, as well as stickers and/or rubber stamps (optional). After the supplies are gathered, and placed on the table, the fun can begin!
Acrylic paint sticks well to sugar cubes but tempera or water-based paint will only melt the sugar. There are different designs that the girls can create so each one can pick the number of sugar cubes to use. For instance, if the girl has a long name, she can use one sugar cube for each letter in her name. If she has a short name, she can take one cube for each letter, and then one blank cube to go between each letter cube.
Align the sugar cubes and paint each one on the top. Turn the cube over and paint the next side. Continue in that manner until all six sides of the cube have been painted, and are dry. The paint dries quickly so the girls can continue crafting.
Letters can be drawn on the sugar cubes by using markers, paints and tiny brushes, fingernail polish, stickers, or rubber stamps. Make the letters and, if you’ll be using blank cubes of sugar between the letter cubes, decorate them with marker flowers, sticker designs, or even brass tacks.
After designing the cubes, push a needle from one side to the other – on each cube – and thread them onto a cord or a string. Tie it in a bow and wear the party favor necklace, bracelet, or anklet.
There are even more designs that can be made with the sugar cubes. One is done by threading on a sugar cube, and then a silk flower, another cube, and another flower. Let the girls create their own party favors with sugar cubes and craft supplies; they’ll never forget the experience!
