There are three ways to deal with an ant invasion. Solutions include the natural method with no chemicals, treating inside with chemicals, or treating outside with chemicals. Determine what type of ants you have and try each method to see what works best for you. As a real estate agent, I dealt with many pest control companies and learned some are much better than others. As a homeowner, I watched ants invade my home in a scary fashion like a horror movie. Research and interview several pest control companies to receive advice before the horror movie starts.
The Natural method With No Chemicals
If you are a “do it yourself-er” or want to avoid chemicals, try these solutions and tips to see if the ant problem is solved. Cornmeal or cream of wheat should be placed where ants will eat this and cause them to explode inside.
Repellents that ants do not want to be around are peppermint, pepper, chili powder, cloves, and bay leaves. Spraying vinegar for cleaning is reported to chase away ants as well as cinnamon. Ant hills in the yard can be destroyed with boiling or soapy water. These natural methods might work for you.
Treating Inside With Chemicals
Simply cleaning inside your home to remove all dirty, sticky spots is essential. Chemical sprays and a good cleaning might solve your problem. Diazinon is a chemical banned by the EPA now, but that used to work when sprinkled around the house. Be careful when choosing and using chemicals.
Hiring a professional company to spray inside can work, but carefully select the company you choose and ask for a guarantee. Have them evaluate the type of ants first. I had carpenter ants invading my yard that crawled up the walls of the house and entered like aliens or ghosts. Treating inside did not solve the problem.
Treating Outside With Chemicals
If the natural method or inside treatment works for you that is great. At my home I tried sprinkling my yard and around the house with many products. Finally, I got a reputable pest control company that sprayed the ant trails outside and gave me a guarantee that worked.
The ants at my home were dangerous as they would seriously invade and bite in an aggressive way. Once every year or two I call them if the problem returns. Success for ant invasion differs for each situation.
