Not to be confused with the rock band The Strokes (an impressive rock group with roots in New York City) an actual stroke (also know as “brain attacks”) can cause changes in behavior, speech, movement, and even temporary paralyzed movement that can be permanent if not treated properly. I haven’t seen The Strokes nor do I own the cover album “Stroked” but I have had people in my immediate family suffer from a stroke (as I have never had a stroke myself). A stroke happens when blood can’t get to certain parts of the brain which causes temporary loss of the area affected of the brain.
One of my uncles had a stroke in the early “tens” of this decade, and it was a bit more complex due to the fact that he’s been HIV positive since the early 2000’s. Thankfully, he managed to regain full mobility of the dominant side of his body eventually but during his rehabilitation (he was fully aware during the stroke recovery process) he considered suicide. According to him “it was on the dominant side of his body and he would have missed if he shot himself” which was stated in a jokingly manner as he has a dark and warped sense of humor being lucky enough to be alive (which is difficult considering what he was going through.)
Another situation other than that what entailed regarding a person with a stroke (but not mentioning the time I did background work on a movie with Drew Barrymore, whom at the time was dating a member of The Strokes) was when I was taking care of a gentleman who had just had a stroke. This man was completely unaware of his stroke which caused memory loss, impaired speech, and impaired mobility. He was in a position whereas he had no family to take care of him during his time of emergency which led him to a temporary shelter with no recollection of how he had ended up in his situation. With his special needs he needed a helping hand to get from A.) A shelter to B.) A place that can meet his needs until he could get back to his family in Jamaica. This is where I came in which was taking him to his government assistance programs as he couldn’t put together sentences (especially under stress.)
He eventually recovered from his stroke and went back to his family in Jamaica. Without my help it would have been a lot like Julian Casablancas (of The Strokes) solo effort in that he can do it on his own, but for safety’s sake we like to imagine him with the other bandmates we know and love to give him a helping hand.
