The PC game FTL: Faster Than Light has dozens of different augmentations that improve your ship in various ways. Many of these augmentations offer unique benefits that can’t be gained through any other means. The main advantage of augmentations is that they don’t cost energy, though you are limited to only three at once. Weapon augmentations improve the power and efficiency of your weapons. Often the right weapon augmentation can be better than a new weapon for attacking enemy ships. The following guide to weapon augmentations in FTL: Faster Than Light will help you determine which augmentations are best for your needs.
Stealth Weapons (50 Scrap) – Stealth Weapons is a completely worthless augmentation if you don’t have a Cloaking system equipped. If you do, it is one of the best possible choices. After equipping Stealth Weapons, none of your weapons drain time from your cloak after it is activated. Normally only beam weapons can be used without penalty and beam weapons are practically worthless when used independently. Combine this with a powerful missile or fast laser weapon and you can easily barrage enemies while safely hiding behind your cloak.
Defense Scrambler (80 Scrap) – The Defense Scrambler effectively negates all enemy defensive drones. This is particularly useful if you tend to use a lot of missiles, but isn’t particularly worthwhile if your main offense is lasers. If you manage to get it for free, you should never sell it, but don’t buy it because 80 scrap is very expensive for a rather conditional benefit.
Automated Re-Loader (40 Scrap) – The Automated Re-Loader reduces the cooldown timer of all of your weapons by 10%. Additionally, you can equip multiple of this augmentation and the benefits stack. This is great if you tend to use weapons with high cooldown times. Even if you use low cooldown weapons, it will give you that slight edge against a similarly equipped enemy that gives you a chance to disable an enemy weapon before you are attacked. This is the rare augmentation that you may want to equip in all three of your slots.
Explosive Replicator (60 Scrap) – If you don’t have any missile launchers, the Explosive Replicator is worthless. If you do, it is amazing. Every time you fire a missile, there is a 50% chance that you won’t expend one of your missile stock. Effectively this doubles your missile supply and lets you actually attack with them regularly, rather than saving them for specific moments in battle. Try to get a high damage missile launcher if you have this augmentation.
Hacking Stun (60 Scrap) – Hacking Stun is another augmentation that is completely worthless if you don’t have the right system on your ship. Hacking Stun only helps if you have a hacking system. When you use a hacking attack, Hacking Stun stuns all enemy crew members in the targeted room. This is particularly good when combined with a boarding, though that isn’t necessary. To make this meaningfully useful, make sure that you have at least a level 2 sensor subsystem or a crew member manning the subsystem.
Weapon Pre-Igniter (120 Scrap) – The Weapon Pre-Igniter is easily the best augmentation in the game. When equipped, all of your weapons start fully charged after each FTL jump. This always allows you to get the opening salvo against an enemy. It is particularly good when paired with weapons that have incredibly long recharge times and paired with chain weapons. If you have the option to acquire this, it is almost always your best choice, no matter what else you have to pass up on.
