It all starts with a rug. Oblong, oval, round or square. Geometric pattern, traditional or country style, what’s under your feet is the statement rug needed for the rest of the room décor. Pick two color hues from the statement rug and build your room color scheme from them. If the statement rug is reversible, chose one that has some of the same color hues on each side and select room décor colors from those so no matter which side of the rug is up all the colors will work together. Use these tips and get the most from your statement rug that started your room décor.
When choosing a room sized rug, the right size for the room will leave 2-3 feet of exposed floor around the perimeter of the room.
If the area rug is to fit under the dining table, it should be large enough for all the chairs to remain on it when they are pulled out away from the table.
When the statement rug will be used in a seating area, the front legs of all chairs and couches should be able to rest on the rug.
Unroll the rug or remove rug from hanger and lay it flat on the floor before buying it as it will look quite different lying flat than it does when suspended from a hanger.
Padding that fits between the area rug and the floor should be designed for your specific flooring type. The padding will prevent the area rug from slipping, protect both the floor and the rug from wear and tear, and increase the life of the rug by allowing dirt to pass through and onto the floor instead of remaining trapped in the carpet fibers and doing damage to the rug.
Clean your statement rug as directed by the manufacturer. Most can be easily cleaned by vacuuming and spot cleaning as needed. Some indoor/outdoor rugs can be taken outside and hosed down a couple times per year to wash away imbedded dirt. All should be steam cleaned or professionally cleaned every two years.
To help the statement rug wear evenly, turn it around (180 degrees) every 6 months. Small rugs can be turned more frequently to ensure even wear. Some rugs are reversible and should be flipped monthly to extend the life of the carpet.
