I’m the first one to tell you that taking time off from writing is vital. Your mind simply works better when it has a rest here and there. I hate to say this, because I’m a nice person, but those multitasking, always working wonder writers make me chuckle. Sorry, folks, but you’re not doing yourself any favors. You need to live before it’s too late to get a life. You also have other responsibilities. However, there are times when your “free” time can be used to write. When is that? Well, it’s when you have nothing better to do.
Waiting for anything makes me miserable. I used to hate when I had to go to the laundromat, for instance. Especially if there were no good magazines. The doctor’s office is another good example and arghhh, that motor vehicle department! I have a washer and dryer at home now. Unfortunately, I still have to suffer through those last two. But wait, not necessarily. If I bring the laptop, I can at least earn money writing while waiting.
Too tired for TV?
Maybe your spouse is watching something you don’t like. You just have the one TV. You’re too tired to do much of anything else. I write quite often while my partner watches TV. He works long hours while I stay home, so I give him the remote most nights. When I don’t like his choice of program, I don’t complain. I just write instead. I’m still present if he wants to talk. I just pause from my work. After all, he’s more important than my job, any day.
In the car
Think about all the time wasted in transit, waiting for someone you’re picking up or waiting in the car while someone runs into the store really quick. It can be productive to use the the time to think. Freeing your mind up and just letting your thoughts flow makes for some interesting articles and angles. Of course, if you already have ideas, you can write too.
Having no WIFI when writing isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes when you’re out and about, there’s none to be found. Think of all the distraction you have when connected. Not being able to go online means you can’t go on Facebook. You can’t play some games. You can’t retrieve your messages. You can’t even read the work of others. What a great opportunity to focus on writing. The time you were going to use to play around or surf the web can be spent writing instead.
