For trout fishermen there is no better time of the year than the springtime. As we all emerge from a long winter of shoveling snow and slipping and sliding on the roads certain things begin to happen. The days begin to lengthen, the weather begins to get warmer, and trout fishermen (like myself) begin to get antsy. The trout season begins for most areas of the United States in March or April and weary trout fishermen and women from these areas head out to their local lakes and rivers in search of spring trout as soon as the season opens in many cases.
The species of trout that is most often targeted is the rainbow trout and for those of you who choose to fish for rainbow trout while using ultralight spinning gear, rather than fly fishing gear, using an effective fishing lure is of the utmost importance. Well, if you are one of these anglers like I am, read on and you will find a list of a few of the best trout fishing lures that I personally use when fishing for spring trout. These lure choices are based on almost thirty years of experience fishing for the beautiful species of fish known as the rainbow trout.
- Mini Jigs – Mini jigs are very small, lightweight jigs that are usually fished under a small Styrofoam float and hungry spring trout will readily gobble up. What size are these jigs normally? An 1/8 of an ounce at the largest. In fact many trout fishermen like to use jig heads that are as small as a 1/32 of an ounce. Plastic or marabou bodies both work well and it’s a good idea to have a variety of colors available so that you can determine which color and/or style will produce the best on a particular day.
- Panther Martin FishSeeUV Marabou Spinners – This new line of fishing lures from Panther Martin are particularly effective for spring rainbow trout, why? Because in the spring of the year the water that rainbow trout are found in is usually stained to downright muddy and these fishing lures are much easier for the trout to locate in these types of water conditions. Couple this with the fact that Panther Martin spinners have a patented blade design that creates a vibration under the water that is said to “call” fish in and you’ve got yourself an effective springtime rainbow trout lure.
- Rattling Crank Baits – This fishing lure usually isn’t thought of as a trout fishing lure, but I’m here to tell you that it should be. Small rattling crank baits, such as a Rat-L-Trap, can catch a limit of rainbow trout faster than you can say, “spring fishing”. It’s the same theory as the fluorescent spinners from Panther Martin, the commotion that rattling crank baits make under the water, gives the trout something to target on, and when they do, they often attack the noisy bait like a little shark.
The bottom line is that when it comes to spring trout, the aforementioned trout fishing lures should be a part of your repertoire. If they are you will experience more success this trout season, I guarantee it.
