When we first got on the internet in the mid ’90s, there was a short clip showing a woman trying to clean her carpets. A tiny voice said, “It takes a pretty hefty housewife to get the best results.” I believe it. Cleaning carpets by hand is not easy.
Broom vs. Swiffer: We just bought our first Swiffer. I’ve wanted one for some time, but never got around to buying one. It is by far the better choice. There’s more to it than the simple fact that we get all the dirt and the tons of cat hair up. It’s a lot easier on those of us with bad backs and bad knees. No more bending over to sweep the debris into a dust pan. Just lift the Swiffer up and take off the premoistened cover.
Cobweb Mop vs. Shop Vac: There are three reasons I prefer the shop vac. It gets all of the webs, nothing rains down on my head and I don’t have to get as close to the spiders that made the webs. Make sure your shop vac has extensions that reach to the highest part of your ceilings. Most do.
Hand Vacuum or Brush: We have a long haired blond cat. We also have a chocolate brown sofa. Well, it used to be chocolate brown. Sometimes it looks blond. Without a hand vacuum, the only other method of getting the cat hair off the couch is with a brush. Not even a lint roller can cope with it.
You may be thinking that the shop vac could double for a hand vacuum, but to be honest it’s not a good idea. Even without the extensions it is too unwieldy for the tight spaces in our living room. There is also the fact that the cat is twenty years old and afraid of the shop vac. He doesn’t mind the hand version, and the hand version can handle the cat hair.
Spray cans vs. Wipes: Have you ever sprayed a cleaning product on a surface only to have it hit other surfaces that don’t respond well to the spray? I have. Glass cleaner gets on wood, wood cleaner smears the mirror…it’s a mess. Then you have to make sure you have the right type of towel to clean it off. Cleaners don’t mix well with each other, either.
Enter the specialized wipe. I love them. I don’t have to wonder if the cloth I used to oil the furniture will stain something in the wash. I don’t have to clean furniture polish off of my mirrors and best of all I can actually get my stainless steel appliances clean.
Spring cleaning has never been my favorite job, but it is a lot easier now. I can get what used to take a week done in a day or two…even if I’m working. I love it.
