Since his big-time label debut in 2008, Maryland’s own Eric Hutchinson has always been known for writing and performing infectiously upbeat, endlessly catchy numbers– some of which have gone on the see great success. “OK, It’s Alright With Me”, “Oh!”, “Food Chain”, “Rock and Roll”, and “Watching You Watch Him” are probably all tracks you’ve heard multiple times in the past and have had secretly ingrained into your head from there even if you’ve never necessarily heard of the artist until reading this article. Now, in his fifth overall studio effort being released this April in the form of ‘Pure Fiction’, Hutchinson is shooting for that new, shinier plateau to land upon in the industry, featuring the same infectious winning formula of past albums paired with an extra layer of polish and fine-tuning to ensure venture into the world that radio would love. “Tell the World” was the first single from off of ‘Pure Fiction’ and offered up some of the undeniably pop-ready hooks and happy-go-lucky nature people have come to generally know Hutchinson for paired with an unarguably slick new level of production to go along with it.
Now, the second single from off of the album has been released in “A Little More”, and while it’s just as catchy and fun-loving as you’d expect from Eric, the question is whether or not the extra bit of studio polish makes or breaks the impending record. Cutting the bull-poppy out of the way quick, it can be safely proclaimed that no pros were lost in the transition in sound for Hutchinson into something tight and with more luster. In fact, the extra bit of reverb present on “A Little More” brings a bit more of an “open” feeling than one might expect of a Hutchinson record, allowing his unique tone and unexpected vocal resonance to shine like never before. The way Hutchinson delivers his vocal is like that of a razor, quickly and effectively taking lines down in a compelling and efficient manner that works well with the context of the song’s lyric, which pleads to its subject, “Can I get a little bit, a little bit, a little little little bit more from you?”
It really does a great job in capturing the feeling of a rollicking 80s rock number in its 3 minutes and 17 seconds, and for once in the modern era, that actually is not a bad thing. The way that Hutchinson inhabits a song and makes it fun is a tried-and-true formula for success, and it’s no wonder why that is. There’s no one quite as genuinely entertaining as Eric on the pop scene in its current iteration other than the man himself, and even when he’s not monopolized this side of the industry, he’s doing it best. “A Little More” is a fantastic track that is sure to get its audience up on its feet and- hopefully -propel Hutchinson a little higher up on the pop charts as he so very much deserves.
