The space under the stairs is left unused in most homes, yet it is the perfect spot for many functional purposes. With a little planning, under-stair space can create a purposeful zone for work, play, entertaining, or relaxation.
Before planning any under-stair design, be sure to measure the dimensions to see what will fit. Consider not only the width that will accommodate furniture, but also the head space that it will provide. If there isn’t a lot of room for clearance, the best option may be to use under-stair space for storage or organization, instead.
Here are several ways to find purpose for unused under-stair space:
Home office – Whether you need a small space for working from home, or just a spot to pay bills, you’ll love having a home office beneath the stairs. This is the perfect space for a small desk and chair, shelving, and a file cabinet. This area can be converted into a kid’s homework area instead, with many of the same materials.
Sitting nook – Built-in seating can quickly turn the space beneath the stairs into a comfortable reading nook, or nap area. Don’t have the money to customize seating? No problem. Squishy bean bags can be used instead.
Dry bar – Entertaining guests becomes more convenient, and fun, with a built-in dry bar. Use under-stair space to store and mix alcoholic beverages, serve cocktails, and much more. Wine racks can be installed over-head, while a simple countertop or wheeled cart can be used as a serving station.
Kid zone – Anyone with children knows how quickly toys can take over a room. Use under-stair space to keep things organized and give kids a place to call their own. Toys, coloring books and crayons, board games, play stations, and other children’s items can stay in one place and provide a play place for the kids.
Media unit – Why not use the space beneath the stairs as a media unit? There is ample space for a stereo, television, DVD player, and DVD storage. Though, you may need to install electric, if it isn’t already in place.
Storage central – Cabinets, wall cubicles, dressers, portable drawers, bookcases, or even wicker baskets, can create an attractive storage under the stairs. This idea not only utilizes previously unused space, but it helps maximize storage, too.
Cozy library – If you’ve always wanted a home library but felt you didn’t have the space for one, now you do! Use under-stair space to create a unique and cozy library. All you’ll need to do is install a few shelves or bookcases, and maybe a comfy chair, and you’re done.
Entry catch-all – The space under the stairs is the perfect place to store coats, scarves, shoes, pet leashes, backpacks, and other items. Supply an assortment of hooks, baskets, and shelves to keep things neatly organized and ready-to-use.
