“In the thirteen months I’ve been in the Senate, it has become apparent to me the single thing that Republican politicians hate and the fear the most, and that is when they’re forced to tell the truth. It makes their heads explode…A lot of Republicans wanted exactly .what Barack Obama wanted, exactly what Nancy Pelosi wanted, exactly what Harry Reid wanted which was to raise the debt ceiling, but they wanted to be able to tell what they view as their foolish, gullible constituents back home that they didn’t do it.”
So spoke Sen.Ted Cruz a few months ago on radio talker Mark Levin’s show. He is telling the truth.
The vast majority of Members of Congress have at least a bachelor’s degree. Many have more advanced degrees, including lawyers, businessmen, educators, scientists, physicians, professional politicians and more. This is an educated and savvy group of people. Yet in spite of the fact that there is a preponderance of scientific evidence confirming evolution and global warming, many Republican Congressmen deny that either exists. Do they know more than scientists and the educated public? Of course not, but to keep up the support from their constituents, and their special interests, they have a motive to cater to their beliefs.
According to Pew Research, 48% of all Republicans do not believe in evolution. Many believe life began 6000 years ago. This percentage has risen from 39% in 2009, which is a remarkable increase. And Pew also found that 70% of Tea Party Republicans say there is no solid evidence of man-made global warming, and 41% of those say it’s not happening at all. (Many of these people have children going through the school systems. Do we need to wonder why American kids are behind the other industrialized nations in science?)
It almost appears that there is a “dumbing down” occurring in our country. Some blame the schools. Efforts to improve educational standards do not seem to have worked in the past. However, we need to look at other factors, including the examples set by our Republican “leaders” in Congress (as well as some in state legislatures).
Conservative Republicans are anti-big government, one reason being is that they oppose regulations to a large degree. If it is indeed true that global warming is caused by man-made activity, and it most certainly is, solving the problem will require national and international co-operation. Nationally, a host of regulations would need to be made to help save the planet. By claiming there is no threat, the conservative Republicans are not only lying, but increasingly adding to the problem. Nearly all incoming Republican Senators in 2010 stated their disbelief in the established science.
Another reason for the dishonesty is the fact that Congress has given huge subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. They have made billions and billions of dollars in profits, yet the corporate welfare continues. At the same time, Republicans claim that the country is near broke. Why does this continue? The fossil fuel industry donates huge sums of campaign money to these Republicans. What else do you need to know?
So why do they claim evolution is a fraud? Because it undermines their constituents’ religious beliefs. Even though evolution is established science (don’t let the word “theory” throw you – it is), that does not stop our politicians from claiming that prehistoric people lived with dinosaurs and that the Bible is factual from start to finish. Lot’s wife did indeed turn into a pillar of salt if you take them seriously. Why is this dishonesty harmful? Because in order for this nation to stay competitive, we need an educated populace. We need a population that is scientifically knowledgeable to bring our children up with a sound education. We should not tolerate fundamentalism being taught in the classroom in public or any other schools. And we shouldn’t tolerate politicians who are handicapping our children.
Don’t get me wrong. Democratic politicians are no angels, either. Politicians have been dishonest since the first one appeared. But the anti-scientific statements being made are potentially very destructive to our country and the world community, as well as our children.
