COMMENTARY | HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is employing a technique often used in the old Soviet Union and popularized in George Orwell’s novel “1984” by revising the enrollment goals of Obamacare downwards.
Sebelius recently told a Huffington Post reporter that the administration never articulated the goal of signing up 7 million Americans into Obamacare by the end of March, 2014. However she actually did tout that goal in a September 2013 interview on NBC, according to Breitbart’s Big Government.
Meanwhile, Hot Air is reporting that President Obama is bragging that 4 million Americans are enrolled in Obamacare as February 2014 draws to a close. Previous experience suggests that those numbers are not worth the breath it took to utter them.
In the Soviet Union and the Oceana of “1984” the government would announce some kind of production goal according to the latest five year plan. When, inevitably, the actual figures fell short, the news of the original goal would be expunged into the memory hole and the government would announce that the smaller numbers “exceeded” the plan.
It is therefore a safe prediction that whatever the real number of Americans who wind up in Obamacare by the end of March 2014 will be announced as a triumph of the health care reform act, exceeding any expectations the administration actually had.
Unfortunately for the Obama administration, there is no memory hole that a modern day Ministry of Truth can deep six the original 7 million people goal. While many mainstream media outlets will try to cover for the president, enough will remind people that Americans, already beset by disappearing health insurance policies and skyrocketing health costs, will find that their intelligence is being insulted.
The White House thinks it can get away with this because it got away with it in 2012. Obama, despite being a profound failure as a president, managed to get elected. He is counting that enough Americans have the political equivalent of battered spouse syndrome that he will get away with it again.
