I had experienced sciatica (unknowingly) a few years back on my left side, it ran from hip to toe. I never understood what this pain was, where it came from nor did I seek medical attention for it. Having been told this pain was caused from my back, I decided to see a chiropractor for a few visits but none of these made any difference so I stopped going. I lived that way for about a year until it went away as mysteriously as it showed up.
Back around May of this year I started to experience a pain in my knee and calf muscle. Soon the pain began to consume me just as it had a few years back, from hip to toe only this time it was on my right side. I had been seeing the doctor for some other medical issues and during that visit I mentioned my leg pain to him and that began a series of tests that finally led to a specialist and the diagnosis of sciatica and the long journey of ways to relieve the pain. I went from one medication to another but nothing delivered enough relief.
After undergoing x-rays, and an MRI they discovered what is called degenerative disk disorder. Simply put my L4 and L5 located in my lower back had little to no “cushion” between them. What happens is because the bones are closer together the space where the nerve comes out has less room and is “pinched” between them which also causes swelling resulting in the pain that is experienced and referred to as sciatica.
Once again I under went a few visits to the Chiropractor as well as an Acupuncture specialist. Each of these brought a measure of relief as did a procedure called an Epidural and a variety of medications. The Epidural procedure injects a steroid into that area which relieves inflammation which reduces pain and can be repeated every four months. The first failed but much to my relief the second one worked.
What I learned regarding medications for sciatica is that unless it is a “nerve” medication, it will not work on the pain. Why do they prescribe them if they don’t work? Your guess is as good as mine but I will tell you, it was only by my persistence in discussing this with my specialist that we were able arrive at the correct medication and therapy which I am happy to say, today I am medication free. I have started to exercise and walk through life pain free, something I will be forever grateful.
