I am always working to keep the ants away during the summer months. As a pet lover, I want to use products and techniques that do not pose a threat to my furry friends. Try out these methods and let me know what you think.
Homemade Ant Deterrent
- ¼ cups of Chile Powder
- ¼ Cup of Cayenne Powder
- 1 C Baby Powder
- 1 C. approx… Crushed mint Leaves
- ¼ Cup Crushed Basil
- 3 Bay leaves Crushed
- In a medium bowl, I mix all ingredients together.
- If you know where the ants are coming in, concentrate on that area first.
- I sprinkle this mixture around the perimeter of my home and on the window sills. If I am able to find their home outside, I make sure to sprinkle it around the ant compound as well.
Each of these components is pet friendly and anti-ants. Some prefer to use one of these ingredients; I have found effective use by combining them. It creates a more powerful solution.
Other Ingredients that have proven to have success but may be a bit harder and expensive to try are:
Mint Oil, Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus oil and Tea Tree Oil; these oils can be smoothed into an exact know entrance into or in your home. The ants have problems with any mint based or scented products.
In order to best control the ants coming into your home, wash sink, stove and area of entrance with soap and water. The vinegar actually removes the scent trail that ants use to come and go. They leave an invisible substance wherever they go.
If you are looking for an actual store bought product that has been proven to be extremely effective in trapping them once inside, try using the
Terro Ant Killer – This is a small container that contains the ant bait. They get inside and die. The drawback is that it does actually attract the ants. It is best to put up in window sills around the sink and other areas of known ant traffic. To put it in areas that see little traffic would be inviting ants into another area of your home. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to dispose of.
Ants are a big nuisance once they invite themselves into your home. While even the cleanest homes get ants, don’t forget to clean regularly with vinegar and soap water for best results.
