Finding a tasty vegan restaurant in Sacramento is as tough as…well, finding a tasty vegan restaurant in Sacramento. The capitol of California has many options for vegetarian delicacies. It’s California! But where does the vegan go when he wants to eat and be happy? With a little digging and a lot of tasting, I’ve found three great spots for the vegan in you that even your meat-eating friends and family will want to give a try.
Anna’s Vegan Café 3500 Stockton Blvd. (Oak Park), Sacramento, CA 95820
HOURS: Monday CLOSED, Tuesday through Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m..
Menu Sample: Lunch Specials with soup, rice, crispy roll and entrée $4.95, Wonder Chow Mein $5.95, Curry Delight Clay Pot $7.95
If you love Asian food, huge portions and vegan/vegetarian fare above all things then you’ll want to marry Anna’s Vegan Café as soon as it’s legal. Until then you have to stop in often to eat all the delectable plates they have to offer. Not in the prettiest part of town but with the great service and tasty food, I bet you can’t stay away once you try it. Do you take the Mongolian Delight to have and to eat… I DO! Do you take the Pan Fried Chow Fun to have and to eat… I DO! Do you take the Eggplant Sautéed with Basil to have and to eat… I DID and will again and again.
Mother 1023 K Street (Downtown), Sacramento, CA 95814
HOURS: Monday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday CLOSED.
Menu Sample: Kale Salad $8, Fried Okra $5, Eggplant Gumbo $13
Chicken Fried Mushrooms. What’s that? You need more than the words “Chicken Fried Mushrooms”? Really? Okay. How about vegan, downtown, and carrot cake? Well if that doesn’t get you I don’t know what will but you’ll miss out if you don’t check out this brand new spot in town. It’s small and just a baby of a hot spot having opened in January 2014, but where else can you get a “10 for $50” chef’s special of a little bit of almost every delicious vegetarian delight on the menu. More words… eggplant gumbo, sea-salt sprinkled brown butter cookies, carrot nut burger, and MEATLESS SOUTHERN FOOD. You know you want to go. Just avoid peak lunch time downtown. Please note that this vegetarian spot clearly marks the many vegan options on the menu.
Sunflower Natural Food Restaurant 10344 Fair Oaks Blvd. (Fair Oaks), Fair Oaks, CA 95628
HOURS: Monday through Tuesday 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Menu Sample: Nut burger $3.50, Super Nutburger $6.49, Nutty Taco $3.50
When the meat eaters say that the food is good, then you know the food is on a whole new level of tasty veganism. That is why, especially on weekends, the crowd can be thick but no one who eats at Sunflower seems too disgruntled waiting 30 minutes or more for the best Nutburger they ever had. Nice size servings and everything is under $7, but it’s all ala carte so budget accordingly. This old town Fair Oaks spot does not take reservations or do deliveries but you can order take out.
