Scotch whiskey comes from a part of the world where dukes and princes demand – and get — great respect. Chivas Brothers, the makers of Chivas Regal and Glenlivet whiskies, created the Royal Salute label at Strathisla Distillery in Scotland to recognize just that.
The first Royal Salute Whiskey was released in 1953 as a tribute to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The whiskies used in the blend were each aged for a minimum of 21 years and it was quite a hit with scotch lovers. It was only a glimpse into what the brand had to come.
In 2013, 60 years after the Queen’s entry into British monarchy, the Royal Salute Tribute to Honour was created in that same distillery. Only 21 extraordinary bottles were produced and numbered. Only Chivas Brothers Master Blender Colin Scott knew what they would taste like. For anyone else, a taste came at a price tag of the equivalent of about $250,000.
The Royal Salute Tribute to Honour whiskey is something that comes around once in a lifetime. It’s presented in a fashion that salutes that notion, in a bottle designed by London’s famed Garrard Jeweller, who encrusted it with 413 black and white diamonds to form a replica of the Sword of State.
The whiskies used to create the Tribute to Honour were all aged for at least 45 years old. After Scott blended them, each of the 21 bottles was filled by hand.
Atlanta businessman Mahesh Patel was the 13th purchaser and first American to own a Royal Salute Tribute to Honour bottle. He was presented with it by His Grace The Duke of Argyll and Master Blender Colin Scott during a weeklong celebration with Chivas Brothers in Scotland that included a stay at Ballindalloch Castle.
Patel, who is an avid whiskey fan and founder of the Universal Whiskey Experience, plans on opening the bottle someday for a group of passionate scotch lovers. In the meantime, he won’t have to wait to taste the scotch as Royal Salute provided him with an additional small bottle for tasting purposes. He refers to it as “liquid gold.”
A few bottles of Tribute to Honour remain available. If you’re in the market for a gift you certainly don’t have to worry about someone returning, contact Royal Salute.
