Mystic Reign which bills itself as “The Ultimate Party Band” is in the running for a gig opening for headliners Florida Georgia Line and ZZTop at the World Famous Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, South Dakota, on Wednesday, August 6, 2014.
The Southern California rockers got their start playing Biker Rallies, parties and small gigs playing heavy metal covers. They built a following over 8 years, proudly known as Reignheads, who follow them wherever they play. They were named Inland Empire Weekly Magazine’s 2012 Best of the Best Tribute/Cover Band. But now they are stepping up their game and vying for a chance to perform at the biggest gig in motorcycling.
We caught up with the band’s lyricist and vocalist Gypsy, who explained the changes that came about that made them ready to perform on this level. About a year ago, Perfecto De Castro joined the band, and she finally had someone who “could put my words to music”. Their collaboration on originals has changed the focus of the band from being a cover band to playing break out originals geared toward their biker roots. Vocalist and Guitarist Dan Lion has been with the the band since the beginning. He lends his vocals to their first original song “Ride Hard”. The video has already garnered over 10,000 views on YouTube, and has been called The Best Biker Song since “Born to Be Wild.”

Vocalist Gypsy also collaborated with Perfecto De Castro on “Pearl”, a song written about Janis Joplin. Gypy’s dynamic vocals lend themselves perfectly to this ballad, and it’s obvious that she is emotionally involved in the story she is telling. This exact element is why she believes Mystic Reign’s music is quickly gaining popularity “we touch on an emotion that we can all relate to, really, I think that is what music is all about. I write about things that affect me or move me, true stuff.”

Their newest song “Not All Wounds Bleed” will debut in August. It’s a song about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, something which many Veteran bikers deal with on a daily basis. The band hopes that it will strike a cord with people, and bring a voice to people dealing with PTSD.
The Mystic Reign Band is also comprised of Marc Yap on Bass, Paul Dacayan on Drums, and Ben Daughenbaugh on guitar and vocals. They want to bring their “high energy to Sturgis and keep that Party Rockin’!” When asked what it would mean to them to open for a band like ZZTop Gypsy quickly chimed in “They are the classic Biker Band! That would be Epic!”
