The summer sun burns in the sky as you head to your kitchen for a cool glass of water. When you reach for your faucet, you see tiny black vermin crawling about. With summer in full swing, ants are sure to invade even the cleanest of households. They come from out of nowhere and can seem impossible to get rid of. Luckily, there are many natural remedies to the ant problem. Without filling your home with harmful chemicals, you can rid your home of ants for the summer.
A mixture of equal parts water and vinegar will help rid your home of the pests. Simply mixing the two ingredients then washing down your cabinets and counter tops with the solution a few times a day will help. Vinegar had a very strong scent that ants are sensitive to. It is safe to say the insects hate the smell. The scent also covers the scent trails that worker ants follow. Having done this in my home, ants typically run from the vinegar as if their lives depended on it. This mixture is affordable and tested.
Peeling an orange and placing the peels on the problem area can greatly decrease the number of ants seen in your kitchen. The citric acid is actually toxic to multiple types of fungi that ants feed on. This removes cause for the ants to gather in these locations in the first place. With no food source, the ants will vanish from your home in a matter of hours with minimal work involved.
The simple act of vacuuming your home could be the answer to ridding your house of infestation. Ants can feed on the tiniest amounts of food that are impossible for us to see. Ensuring that all furniture crevices and corners of your house are free of food crumbs could defeat your ant infestation so you may reclaim your home. Use the hose on the vacuum to ensure you’ve cleaned as much as humanly possible. As stated earlier, with no source of food ants will have no reason to enter your home.
A far less humane method could start in your lawn. When a large ant mound is seen near your house, pour a pot of boiling water into the top of the mound. This will kill the insects in the colony before they ever enter your home. However, the water may not reach all the way down into the mound and may not kill all of the colony.
Don’t allow ants to claim your home. Fight back and keep your kitchen and house ant-free. These simple solutions eliminate the need for harmful chemicals and seem to work far better than store bought sprays and powders. Leave your ant problems in the past and look forward to a summer with a home filled with only invited guest.
