My wife and I recently embarked on a project to investigate where our money is going. We’ve discovered that we spend a lot more money than we realized on “little things”. Since we had this epiphany, we’ve been challenging ourselves on every little expense no matter how seemingly small. One of those challenges ultimately led me to Dollar Shave Club. I found that I was paying between $2.25 and $3.39 per blade (depending on how many I buy at a time) for replacements for my name brand razor. If you use one blade per week, that’s almost $14 per month. I heard a radio advertisement for Dollar Shave Club and decided to check it out.
Basically, the idea behind Dollar Shave Club is that you sign up for their service and they send you replacement blades for your razor every month for cheaper than you can buy them at the store. They only sell their brand blades that only fit their razors (provided for free) so you’re going to have to switch from your store brand. Their blades, however, seemed very comparable with the brand name razors available in brick and mortar stores. They have three levels starting at $1.00/month at the low end and going up to $9.00/month at the high end. I, like most other people I presume, selected the middle of the road model for $6.00. For $6.00 per month, you get four replacement blades shipped directly to your home or office.
I received my razor handle and my first set of blades 3 days after placing my order. The blades are of high quality-four stainless steel blades, moisture strip, pivoting head etc. They’re very competitive with the popular name brand blades. I have a very thick and course beard (think steel wool), and cannot deal with a low quality or dull blade. I couldn’t have been happier with the quality of the blades and razor, much better than my old name-brand razor. For people with a less than steel wool-type beard or for people whose beard grows slower, they have a “not so hairy” plan that you can select. It works exactly the same, but you only get replacements every other month.
I have also been very pleased with their customer service. The website is easy to use and they make it very easy to make changes to or cancel your plan. My wife borrowed my razor one time and loved it. I decided to buy her a handle ($4.00 including shipping and handling) and we now share a plan (she doesn’t need to replace her blades very often so it’s working so far). Dollar Shave Club also sells their own Shave Butter ($8.00 incl S&H) and “One Wipe Charlies” ($4.00 Incl S&H) which are “buttwipes for men”. Dollar Shave Club sends a short e-mail before they send your package each month asking if you want to add anything to your order, but other than that, they don’t annoy you with a lot of marketing.
I have been a very happy customer of Dollar Shave Club for five months now. I am more than satisfied with the service. I am getting higher quality blades, saving about $10 per month, and I never have to remember to buy blades. I enthusiastically recommend Dollar Shave Club if you’re interested in saving some money on razor blades.
