Leather belts are the best type of belt to wear and recondition once they are old and worn. A leather belt can last for years if taken care of properly.
A belt that is well used needs to have a treatment of some kind every so often to keep it bendable and wearable. It is a good idea to treat leather belts with a leather treatment at least twice a year to keep it supple and nice looking. A belt will become cracked and dry with age and use. You can help revive an old cracked belt with a treatment of oil.
You can use just about any cooking oil to treat a leather belt. Olive oil or canola oil work well. You can also use coconut oil or vegetable oil. Just about any oil you cook with can be used to condition a leather belt.
To use oil to condition your leather belt just take a clean soft and absorbent cloth and soak it in some oil. Don’t take a big cloth a small one about the size of your hand will do great. Take the oil soaked cloth and rub in onto the leather belt. Rub both the inside and outside of the leather belt. Make sure all leather is coated in some of the oil and then let the leather belt sit on a piece of paper or other area that the oil can not hurt and let the oil soak into the belt.
A belt in really bad shape will need two or even more coats of oil before it starts to shape up. Let the oil soak in until the leather belt does not feel oily any more. If the belt sits and soaks for more then a day and it still feels oily you may need to take a dry absorbent cloth and wipe up any extra oil on the leather belt. Then let the belt sit and rest until the oil is soaked into the leather.
Oil will not work on a plastic belt or a belt made of any other material. Leather will absorb the oil and make the belt supple and usable again. In some cases it can make an old worn out belt look nice again.
Use this oil method on any old worn out leather belts that you still want to use. It is alright to get oil on any metal parts just be sure to rub it off because the oil will not soak into metal.
