A birdbath can be a beautiful attraction in your yard for the birds to come and take a bath. It can be entertaining to watch the birds as they bathe. A birdbath can be made of stone, cement or plastic. What ever your birdbath is made of you should put a few stones of different sizes into the bath for the safety of the birds.
Small birds that come to visit the birdbath may have a hard time staying above the water as they bathe. If you put in stones of different sizes in the water of the birdbath then birds of different sizes with come to visit and take a bath. The small birds will come if they feel comfortable and safe.
The best rocks to put into the birdbath are flat rocks. They can be smooth or rough but rough is better so the birds have a surface that they can grab onto with their feet. Put in stones that match the color of your birdbath and the stones will be less noticeable. Or put in stones that are different from the color of your birdbath and the stones can add beauty.
Place your birdbath in a rock garden and the stones in the birdbath with blend in and look more like they belong in the birdbath.
Cats can turn a birdbath into a feeding station since a bird needs to dunk their heads into the water to clean them selves and this distracts them from being alert. A cat can take this short time when the bird is off guard to catch the bird. If you have a birdbath and a cat you need to keep the cat away or get rid of the birdbath. Another way to solve the cat problem is to put a small wire fence around the birdbath so the birds can still fly in but the cat stays out.
You can put a little staircase into the birdbath instead of the stones or some chunks of bricks. Use your imagination and you can think of many things to put into a birdbath instead of stones. But stone are natural looking and the birds will accept them better then many other items.
A birdbath needs to be clean when it gets dirty. When you clean the birdbath remember to put the stones back inside the water to keep the birds safe from drowning.
