I live in San Antonio, Texas. I love to watch the different professional sports teams play during the different seasons. They are entertaining and ticket prices are reasonable. Fortunately, I don’t have to travel to different cities to watch different sports because diverse teams call SA home.
For visitors, San Antonio’s sport teams offer entertainment and more than just a hotel or two. There are many things to do and see; some of them are free. To make the most of your trip, contact the San Antonio Tourist Bureau to find out what events such as parades, plays or festivals are taking place during your stay.
Here is are the teams that call San Antonio home.
Soccer, or football, is a global sport. The Scorpions Soccer team has a large fan base in San Antonio and South Texas. They are currently ranked third in the NASL, or North American Soccer League standings. Free and paid parking lots are available; arriving early is the best way to obtain a space near the stadium.
The team plays at the Toyota Field Stadium, which is located next to Morgan’s Wonderland on Thousand Oaks Drive near IH-35 North.
Spurs- Basketball (Men)
San Antonio is proud to be home to the 5-time winners of the NBA trophy, the Spurs Basketball team. Win or lose, this city is always ready to back the home team with support and encouragement.
Home games are played at the AT& T Center, located on the AT&T Center Parkway. A wide variety of events take place in the center; pick up a schedule while you’re waiting for the game to start.
Silver Stars- Basketball (Women)
The only professional women’s sport team to call San Antonio home, the Silver Stars are a relatively young team. Of their ten years, they have qualified for the WNBA championship playoffs six times.
They play at the AT&T center as well and are just as entertaining and exciting to watch as the men’s teams.
San Antonio Rampage- Ice Hockey
Owned by the San Antonio Spurs Sports and Entertainment company. The team plays at the AT&T center, the same as the other Spur’s teams. They previously were known as the Dragons and then the Iguanas.
Of their young tenure, they have gained a popular following among San Antonio residents and have qualified for the Western Conference playoffs several times.
San Antonio Missions- Baseball
One of the must-see sports teams is the San Antonio Missions baseball team. Although they are minor league, their fans are steadfast and truly love the game. Their mascot, :The Puffy Taco,” is a staple at the games.
The team plays at the Nelson W. Wolfe Municipal Stadium, located at 5757 West US Highway 90 in San Antonio. Parking is available at reasonable prices.
All of the professional sports teams are active in the San Antonio community and have programs for youths as well as being involved in a number of charities. All of the teams sell memorabilia and it is not unusual to see a favorite athlete posing for a fan picture or signing an autograph or two.
San Antonio is host to other professional sports events as well, most notably the WWE, or World Wrestling Entertainment and TNA, or Total Nonstop Action Wrestling companies.
Every February, San Antonio is host to the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, a world-class event featuring a national stock show, carnival and of course, PRCA, or Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo and concerts from top country and western performers.
