As an educator for more than 20 years, I am fully aware of the limitations placed on teachers and schools. On the average, a student in an average sized classroom receives 1-2 hours of individual education per day from their teachers or mentors. The child is in school 7-8 hours per day making for a lot of wasted time. The number of home schooled children increased every year, with parents taking on the role of the child’s main educator. Home schooling provides many advantages to a child but parents need to be prepared for the challenge.
Homeschooling is going to require one parent to be at home with the child. This means loss of one salary for the family. Parents need to evaluate if one income is adequate to meet the family’s needs and save for the future.
State laws toward education vary greatly. Some are quite flexible in terms of home schooling provided the children are not left on their own. Some states however are far stricter. Some demand a state approved home schooling curriculum be used and/ that one parent be a certified teacher. Check into to your state’s local education laws before making the decision to home school.
Find out about your child
Every child had their own interests and learning styles. Home schooling provides the perfect opportunity to cultivate these interests and talents. Talk to your child and find out what they are interested in learning. According to Penelope Trunk, it is best to watch your child and try to learn how they best learn. Your child will gain the most out of the home school experience when they are encouraged to pursue their own interests and learn in a style that is best suited for them.
Spend time with your child.
Some parents look forward to the school day as it is a break from their children. Homeschooling is going to demand more time for the parent and child to be together. It is best you get to know each other and get used to the increased time in each other’s company. Introduce it gradually. Spend and increased amount of time together each week until it is time for home schooling to begin. If the parent and child cant get along together for a long period of time then the homeschooling project will likely fail.
