It’s generally not a good idea for a pregnant woman to mount a stage and perform but that is exactly what Christiana Aguilera did.
On Friday, May 2, 2014, the 33 year-old singer was the star attraction at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival where she wore a short black dress underneath a white overcoat and performed a mixture of jazz, blues and soul songs.
Making an email comment on her unborn child before her performance, she said, “This baby girl has already hit the stage in Malaysia. It’s Mama’s job. We roll with it. She’ll be listening to the concert from inside me… That’s pretty special.”
But Christina is not the only singer to take that risk. Here are others who did.
Pregnant rap goddess Lil Kim attended the Blonds New York Fashion Week show in February 2014, and performed several hit tunes at the Blond’s after-party.
“I’m so excited! I’m a few months along, I can’t wait to be a mom!” she told US Weekly. Talking about her professional future, she said, “I’m still going to work. I’m still going to be hardcore. The baby has made me even more of a beast!”
In August 2011, R&B queen Beyonce took the stage at the VMA’s and before her performance, said “Tonight I want you to stand up on your feet, I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me.” After her gritty rendition of her song ‘Love on Top’, she displayed her baby bump to her audience.
The 2012 FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, and after the final match, Colombian-born singer Shakira entertained the fans on stage with her pregnancy in full view. The ‘Hips don’t lie’ singer made it a point to shake her hips as she sang the 2010 South Africa World Cup song, ‘Waka Waka’.
Prior to the final match between France and North Korea, Shakira alerted her fans to the impending stage show as well as her condition; tweeting: “In a few minutes it will be our baby’s first time on stage and precisely at a football event! Magic Shak.”
After wooing crowds with her Emilio Pucci gown at the 2014 Grammy Awards on January 26th, pregnant singer Ciara defied her condition and made it a point to turn up at the after-party where she performed a selection of songs including ‘Overdose’ from her 2013 album.
Addressing the crowd, she said “I’m working on my new album now. I have some really cool stuff going on. The reason why I’m here and I still stand today is because of my fans… I want to take this moment and dedicate this song. It’s a new song; it’s called ‘Anytime’… I want to share it with you guys.”
Quoting lyrics from the song, she said, “Anytime that you hurt, anytime you in pain / Baby call my name, I’ll be there anytime.”
