As we completed moving our stuff into our new home, my wife and I wanted to build the dream BBQ area in our backyard complete with its own BBQ pit. The love of all BBQ and a complete manly grill master had me on board in a minute.
Select Your Area– When deciding to build an outside cooking area, be sure to take into account the heat and flame that your BBQ area will emit. The most important aspect to keep in mind is space in proximity to buildings and trees. On the other hand, you want it in a sunny area to enjoy the times with your family and friends. My wife wanted shade until I showed her the effects of the heat on shaded area’s such as the branches hanging down. If shade is what you want, build a Gazebo like structure over the grill area.
Design– Based on the area that you have selected, you will want to prioritize your wants. If you are anything like my wife well..”I want everything I want. What do you mean?” In that situation, I had to use graph paper and show her area by area what she could fit it. After I did that, she showed me step by step how I should change things around and presto, everything fit. So, not as to say she way right but to say think outside of the box will be a man’s rescue. Do you want brick, stone or concrete flooring? Always plan your design on paper before you start digging.
Foundation: Once your foundation is decided, begin to work your foundation site. Whatever foundation you decide, site work will be required. In most cases, you will want to dig and level out at least 4″. If you are laying solid stone or brick, you will need to be sure that your site in extremely level. If you are not great at using an old fashioned level, purchase a laser level. They offer the beam of light to help you faster. With concrete, you have a bit more leeway as it will be leveled upon fill and drop. We chose Concrete portions. It is a heavy plastic form that you will fill with concrete to make a design. In this instance, we needed to be sure to be level on the foundation. It does however allow you to add color and unique designs that can’t be found elsewhere.
While this was only the beginning of our expansive project, most can stop at this level if they just want a nice flat area with enough detail to create an inviting atmosphere. It can be dressed with floral planters on the corners, walkways etc.. There is no end to the possibilities especially if you want an open area but don’t mind a pergola. Style and class and just plain beautiful, it was my wife’s answer to the final touch.
