Yep, most people will say drive-ins are a thing of the past and if you didn’t grow up with ’em, you missed out on an American teenage adventure. Whether you were piling a big bunch of kids jammed into one car looking for some fun on a Saturday night or you were out for an inexpensive date, the drive-in movie was the place to go, the place to be. And I’m just happy to say they haven’t all gone away. Here are some great drive-in theaters in and around the Burgh that will bring back some great memories and create lasting new ones:
Dependable Drive-in: Death, taxes … and Dependable Drive-in! Living up to its name, Dependable is located, as it always has been, in Moon Township at 549 Moon Clinton Road. With four great screens showing the biggest movies around, they’ve got some fantastic special offers, and you can even get gift cards. And since Dependable is ‘home of the ‘dollar dog,’ you gotta visit their great snack bar. Dependable Drive-in … since I was a kid and before … 62 seasons and counting! Box office opens at 7 pm. Admission prices: 12 and up $7.00; kids 6 to 11 $3.00. For information, call 412-264-7011 or visit the website.
Twin Hi-Way Drive-in: With the best double features on two big screens, Twin Hi-Way is the closest drive-in theater to Downtown Pittsburgh. They’re located in Robinson Township at 5588 Steubenville Pike, just minutes from Pittsburgh, close to Parkway West and I-79. They’ve even got ‘Classic Car Night’ every Saturday night, and they’ll host your next special event! Admission prices: 12 and up $6.50; kids 6 to 11 $3.25; kids 5 and under free; 65 and up $3.25. Call 412-494-4990 for more information, or visit the website.
Brownsville Drive-in: A little further out from Pittsburgh, but definitely worth the drive, Brownsville Drive-in is located in Grindstone at 6229 National Pike. They’ve got three huge screens, and they’re open April through October. This drive-in’s another fabulous throwback, as it’s been around since 1949. And they’ve even got mini-golf! Admission prices: adults $8.00; kids 3 to 10 $3.00; kids under 3 are free. For more information, call 724-785-7190 or visit the website.
In spite of what you thought, drive-ins are still around … and they aren’t going anywhere. Thankfully, this great piece of nostalgia is still going strong. Yes, a drive-in is still a great night out, no matter what your age. So what are we waiting for? Let’s all go to the movies!
