I purchased the Phillips Norelco PowerTouch Cordless Razor for my husband for Father’s Day. He has used these type of razors for years and we have bought some of the most expensive as well as the some of the cheapest. This razor was in the middle of the price scale and I chose it mainly because of the 50 minute charge time.
Packaging: This razor comes in a box suitable for gift giving and inside the razor is packaged in a hard plastic shell. At first I thought I would have to break into it with scissors but was happy to see a perforated edge on both sides making it easier to free the razor from the packaging.
Whats in the box: The razor, a cover, charger, and a little brush to clean the razor. I was hoping for a new case because my husband primarily shaves in the car so he needs a case for it. He has been using the same case that came with an older razor so he will continue to use that but we would have preferred a new protective zipper case to some of the other features like wet shaving which he never does. The only way to get a case is to buy the most expensive one which is about $100 more than this one. That would be one expensive case.
Charging and power: We really liked the fact that this Razor is fully charged in 1 hour. Also it has a function that allows you to quickly charge in just three minutes enough for one shave. The razor will work for 50 minutes on one charge.
Led Indicator: The shaver has one led that will let you know if your battery is low and needs charging. The same light will also let you know when the shaver is charging and fully charged. It will also let you know when you have charged enough for one shave. The book explains what each indicator means. We were wondering if it really had the lights because we did not see anything at all until I plugged it in to charge and then you could see the lights. Otherwise it looks completely black.
The Blades: The Norelco AT830 has the three round cutting blades that move up and down depending on the contours of whatever you are shaving. The blades are covered with slots and holes making them able to cut longer hairs as well as shorter stubble. The slots cut the longer hairs and holes cut the shorter stubble.
The cutting heads move around while you are shaving but the entire top of the razor also pivots to make it easier to move with the contours without moving your hand that much.
Blades can be purchased and replaced when they get dull. It takes replacement blade HQ8.
Wet / Dry: You can use this razor wet with shave gel or cream but I am not sure the extent to which you can get the razor wet. I would not dunk it in a bowl of water but it does appear to be safe to use it on wet surfaces and rinse it out with water. While I would not dunk it in the sink according to the manufacturer it is 100% waterproof.
Pop Up Trimmer: The pop up trimmer was another feature that was a must because I cut my husbands hair and need the trimmer to trim the back of his neck. I used to have a separate trimmer but we have found that the one on the razor works just as well or even better than what we were using. To use the pop up trimmer you just press to open it up turn on the razor and that’s it.
Our Experience using the razor
Speed: My husband states that he felt like this razor gets the job done way faster than his old one but I have to admit that we never changed the blades on the old one and it was several years old. I will admit that I borrow the razor occasionally to shave my legs and can say that this razor is way faster than his old one. It is able to shave completely in one pass.
Comfort: The razor has a great contoured shape to hold on to and is easy to grip. It is also light weight. This razor gives a very comfortable shave. My husband reports that he thinks this one is even more comfortable than his old one, but again that could be the newness of the blades and razor in general. I think that this one is a bit smoother and perhaps the sharper blades make it more effective and not having to make multiple passes makes it seem more comfortable…and just a lot less work!
Quiet: The razor has a gentle hum when it is running but is very quiet and you could easily be listening to the radio or TV while using it. My husband shaves in the car all the time and it is quiet enough that we do not have to raise our voices to talk over it.
How well it holds a charge: As advertised it holds a charge for at least 50 minutes. We have never timed it out exactly but feel it is pretty accurate. It has a light that lets you know when it is fully charged and it does charge in one hour which is fantastic as some of them have to be charged overnight. We also tested it out to see if it would do the single charge and that worked as well. As far as the battery life this is a great razor.
The Wet Dry Feature: We have not tried the wet feature because my husband shaves in the car and I have only used it dry on my legs because usually I just use it to get a little stubble on my knees that is hard to get when I am shaving my legs in the shower. I also use it for a quick touch up now and then.
Final thoughts and rating
I gave this razor 4 stars. While I was great in nearly every way there were just a couple things that could have made it perfect. A zippered carrying case is nice for anyone to protect the razor when traveling. Also an indicator that would tell you how much charge you have left rather than just the one that tells you its time to charge it.
