Do you have a pet? I have three; two dogs and a cat.
One of my dogs is getting up in years, he is nine but in people years he is 63 years old, he is almost as old as I am. As an older dog, Remington has much the same problems as I do. Our pets are just like us in many ways. They have aches and pains just like us. They can have cancer, leaky bladder, joint pain, lose their teeth and their hair. They even grieve, only thing is they cannot talk about how they feel. I check my pets twice a day, once in the morning and again at night before they go to bed. As an older dog Remington’s belly is more sensitive than my younger dog Bear.
All three of the boys have been neutered because I am not a breeder and do not want them breeding if they should get out. The problem with spading or neutering our pets is they have a tendency to gain weight.
Visits to the veterinarian
Visits to the veterinarian should be at least once a year, but every six months is better for older pets. I would choose a veterinarian that is not a sales rep for the dog food he has in his waiting room. I want my veterinarian to be my pet’s doctor and nothing more. Picking a veterinarian is like picking a doctor for ourselves. Watch the way he/she and staff handle your pet. Watch how your pet reacts to the veterinarian and the staff.
Mange is caused by difference types of mites that get into the dog/cat hair. The first sign of mites is the hair falls out. However, left untreated mange can cause immune system problems. The veterinarian will have to do a skin scraping and urine test. (https://www.petmed.com)
Parvo is highly contagious. It will spread though a whole kennel almost overnight. Parvo is an intestinal disease. There is a vaccine that can protect dogs from getting it. Places dogs can come in contact with parvo is dog parks, kennels where they are boarded, and coming in contact with other dogs in the neighborhood.
Tumors do not always mean cancer, but they can turn into cancer. Usually older pets get tumors. Tumors can spread to other parts of the animal’s body. If there are too many, surgery may be out of the question. The best preventive is to check your pet daily. Feel all over when you are petting him/her. Not just dogs and cats get tumors; birds, fish, snakes and lizards do too.
It is very important to take care of your best friend so that he/she has a long and happy life with you.
