May 10: Marlins (20-17) 3, Padres (17-21) 9
Behind a stellar start from lefty Eric Stults, the San Diego Padres scored early and often to thump the Miami Marlins 9-3 on their home field. Seth Smith and Chase Headley knocked in seven of the game’s runs.
The Marlins started off the game hot with a pair of runs in the first frame. Casey McGehee belted a two-run shot to center field for the 2-0 Miami advantage.
The Padres answered right back with solo runs in the first and third innings. Smith capitalized the third with a line-drive homer to right field.
San Diego then took control of the game when Jedd Gyorko singled home a run and Headley knocked in three with a big fly to right in the sixth frame.
Both teams traded blows in the end for the final tally of 9-3 in favor of the Padres.
After allowing the two-run shot to McGehee in the first, Stults finished the game with six innings, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
Relief pitcher Carlos Marmol got the loss for the Fish with four runs allowed in his sixth inning of work. His ERA was bumped to 8.10.
