I have been looking for natural ways to add fiber to my diet for quite some time and have tried the Metamucil Drinks and even adding straight psyllium to my food and drink. All of these have worked but it is not so easy to get the straight psyllium down and I am not crazy about ingesting a bunch of unnatural flavors and sweeteners with my fiber supplement.
I started looking for just psyllium in a capsule and decided to give Now Foods Psyllium Husk Caps a try. I have been very pleased with the positive effects and the ease of taking this fiber supplement.
The capsules contain 500 mg of psyllium husk powder per capsule. The origin of the psyllium husk is Plantago Asiatica seed. Other ingredients are Gelatin(capsule), and Magnesium Stearate (vegetable source)The Magnesium Stearate helps with the process of putting the powder into the capsules.
Each plastic bottle contains 500 capsules. The capsules are not very big or hard to swallow. They are clear so you can see the tan colored psyllium inside. The capsules are each nearly 7/8″ long and just over 1/4″ wide. I like that the label shows you the outline of the capsule to show you the actual size.
According to the bottle one serving equals 3 capsules. Each serving is 6 calories, 1.3 g of carbohydrates, and 1.1 g of dietary fiber. This would be considered soluble fiber according to the label.
It is important to remember to drink plenty of fluid when taking a psyllium supplement because psyllium can swell up to 50 times its original size when mixed with water. For this reason make sure to take the three capsules with at least 8 oz of water. I use just water and not juice or soda.
The recommended dosage is 3 capsules twice a day with a full 8oz glass of water. I have found that just using 5 in the morning with 16oz of water seems to do the trick for me. Twice a day is probably best but I find the morning dose to be the most important.
It is important that you do not take this with medications. Even though it does not say anything on the label, to me it seems like common sense. Psyllium tends to absorb liquid and I would be afraid that it might absorb any medications that ingested at the same time. I would wait a good couple hours before or after consuming psyllium before taking medications.
The Results of taking Now Foods Psyllium Husk Caps
IBS: I am sure many of you can relate to the symptoms of IBS. For me it is not a huge problem and I have what I would call a mild case of IBS. My symptoms seem to be that after I eat things just go straight through me causing cramping and other painful, uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms.
I have never had a problem with constipation but rather going too often or feeling as though food goes right through me. With taking the supplement it seems to help things to go through in the appropriate time frame and helps things ease out on the other end. It eliminates cramping that I sometimes get from IBS along with the need to rush to the bathroom.
Hemorrhoids: The other thing that it helps with is not disturbing my hemorrhoids. I have a few of them from having given birth and anyone with hemorrhoids can tell you that having a nice clean bowel movement is much easier than a painful liquid one. One thing you will notice when adding a regular psyllium supplement is that you will need a lot less toilet paper to get yourself clean. Not having this residue that has to be repeatedly wiped really cuts down on getting any hemorrhoids all worked up and inflamed.
Blood Sugar: Another thing it has helped me with is to regulate my blood sugar. I do not have diabetes but sometimes get symptoms of hypoglycemia. Feeling shaky or anxious when I consume carbohydrates. Since adding the psyllium supplement I find that I can handle carbohydrates much better throughout the day.
Cholesterol: I really do not have a cholesterol problem and I have not had my cholesterol checked since starting this daily regimen but from what I have heard pysllium can help keep your Cholesterol at a healthy level.
Cost / Value of Now Foods Psyllium Husk Capsules
I think I pay about $12 for 500 of these. They are well worth the price and probably save me buying other medicines or having to go to the doctor.
The main warning is to make sure to drink plenty of water and make sure that these go down completely. If you have trouble swallowing you should consult your physician before taking these. Since pysllium can swell up to 50 times its size, it could be a choking hazard if it were to get stuck in your throat.
