Smartphones are our daily companion. We pretty much walk around with our lives sitting by our side or in a bag never more than a few feet away unless you drop it that is. Whenever that happens you cringe but as long as it still kind of works its ok. That was the case with me previous Motorola Android phones the Droid 2 which was a great 3g phone it was a nice leap from the original. The text was amazing because I was still using physical keyboards. I then had the Droid 4 which was pretty good but the battery was not removable and it was a shame it had such poor battery life and the touch wasn’t great and it was very heavy. I had dropped it got it a little wet here and there and it was starting to delete photos and become corrupt. It was time to purchase a new phone.
I am fortunate to be grandfathered into a unlimited data plan within a family plan as long as I do not use the credit to upgrade my phone. In the modern era the internet has so many sites that you can trust to purchased a new or refurbished like new phone etc. I compared www.ebay.com, www.glyde.com, www.swappa.com, www.bestbuy.com, www.amazon.com and www.newegg.com. My use is minimal now a days since I work from home due to the nature of my technical work. I love taking cell phone photos though so I was really drawn by the Apple, Samsung and Nokia phones. The Nokia was the runt of the litter because it was the one I have known and seen the least and it ran Windows OS with tiles and things I did not understand so it was my pure prejudice that I placed it 3rd. However when I looked at reviews on www.youtube.com as well as www.cnet.com it all came down to taking a chance and well price of course. I was able to locate a great Nokia Lumia 822 on Amazon for under $100.
The Nokia Lumia 822 comes out of the box with Windows 8.0 Operating system which if you are going to use it as your first smart phone or you are migrating from an android it will be a very easy transition. This is the first ever Windows OS that I have ever used so I cannot compare to any previous iterations. In my opinion this phone and OS works very intuitively. You can adjust the tiles and its great to have the simplification of just scrolling your apps now known as tiles on one screen/page. The other page is accessed by swiping to the right, here you will find all the apps on the phone and settings. You can scroll or tap and only the letters that have content are illuminated. It is really easy to do with one hand and the screen is very responsive I rarely make a mistake. I really enjoy the text you can tap, swipe or use voice to text for sms communications. The camera is an 8.0 megapixel camera and what makes it amazing to me is the software that comes preloaded the filters and the editable photo options are impressive.
If you are tech savvy you may be able to upgrade early to Windows OS 8.1 and add the new amazing voice assistant Cortana. This is a Siri like assistant it has a conversational feminine voice and looks like a red circle. I have jokes around with it and used it for text while driving and she is really accurate and reads back the text and asks if it is ok to send or not etc. It is a brand new feature that is going to garner some attention. It is supposed to learn from the user over time and be different for each person over time. It is already really helpful for me and I have only owned the phone for one month. The apps are not as plentiful but many of the apps that I would use are here. I had to give up about 4 apps that I really liked on android but maybe in time they will come to windows.
The phone works really well with heavy use the battery lasts all day the on board navigation is amazing it is funny though if you speed it will beep it knows the speed limit for almost every road that you are driving. It also tells you your estimated time of arrival and has traffic alerts it was really great on a recent trip when I tested it out. I was going to PA from NJ and I had no troubles. I think I jumped over to Nokia and Windows OS at the right time. Previously I might have been disappointed, but I am really happy with the ease of use, look and feel after I got a silicon case, camera, Cortana, and price. I have to stress getting a case otherwise for this model in particular the back of the case feels like it will not stand up. It feels a little loose or thin and you want to ensure you protect your phone. Any case will be worth it.
