No Ethics: No Matter
Keisha L. Merchant
In this day in time, people are crazed with the very notion that ethics do not matter. The rights to freedom of speech include the freedom to borrow ideas. This started during the age of the 50’s when people borrow ideas to make life better through innovation and invention. Intellectual property did not become a recognized commodity until recently in the early 2000’s due to artists, singers and musicians who struggled with their sales due to explosion of the internet. Education followed after the boom of the internet access to information. The global community became finger tips away and access to ideas without the penalty of theft became an issue to educational institutions. This made their institution lose money. People did not have access to education and was not concern about building their opportunities because they were able to get on the internet and build their own portfolio in the matter of minutes with the click of the button.
Does it matter? Ethics only matters to the capitalist when it stunts their growth in profits. Exploitation to others have been the number rule of business since the beginning of time. Plagiarism was never an issue in the past due to the collaboration of capitalist with each other. Now that competition arises, people are not as collaborative as the past suggests. Slavery was a number one factor in the past as to plagiarism. People were owned by their masters, and so their ideas were owned by their masters equally. It was not considered as ethical to steal from your property as to a slave. Thus, still we practice in our current positioning of power that people who are employers can create documents that give them rights to intellectual properties without any penalties. This is the process of a capitalist society. Marxist suggest that the masses are not sober due to their inability to protect their own interests with the power of capital. But, the question is not ethics, but the positioning of power.
People have shared their ownership to intellectual property since the beginning of time from cooking recipes, methodologies of agriculture, and slaves in their practices of intellectual properties from child raising, small inventions to make their lives easier in the field. It is a second nature to giving generously, so what happened in the 21st century that people are penalized for their ethical component of intellectual properties? The fact that it does not matter if people are unethical begins with the question what is the damage and costs of unethical practices? In the movie, Matrix, a character reminds us that ignorance is bliss. This statement allows people to dismiss ethics when under a culture of generosities. It is with this notion that ethics would not matter. The culture matters first and foremost if the community is equally giving freely as an exchanging of values and love for the greater good. Many philosophers and spiritual teachers spoke of this goodwill contract, social contract as Kant, suggest in the beginning of time, the balance of all universes, rest on the shoulders of generosity. So what happened? It was stated in the corruption of humanity for self preservation people lived in fear of scarcity. People could not survive any longer on the abundance of resources equally given in distribution as it had been in the previous histories.
The preservation for human life of survival started during the age of species extinction. The scientists made notions that humanity would fight, kill and steal to stay alive, but what is the falsehood or fallacy of mental health? The illusion of death of having without when plenty of goods are still present? The intellectual property as a means of capital to survive becomes an issue as to water is to the body and shelter to humanity. Education is the root to capital. In the beginning education was not used as a tool of weapon or survival but a tool of self-actualization. Now it has shifted to becoming one of the greatest tools of war and prestige in an age of scarcity. Therefore, the struggle begins in an illusion of scarcity that people are misguided to steal for the greater good of self. The notion of self preservation under the fallacies of first come first serve. This is the statement of ethics do not matter therefore, plagiarism has become a sense of the fight against extinction the humanity’s psyche of self-preservation rather self-actualization. Now, the argument is not that it matters, but why it does not matter? It does not matter for the student due to death is on the rising, and mortality rates are higher than in the past, the illusion to be first when in fact no one is first. It is the illusion that people rise up against each other, to protect their own, when in fact, at the end of the day, they are swept away by the scarcity of illusions in their mind. (Collins, 2000) The starvation of true evaluation of the circumstance that people are mislead to be captives of hallucinations that education matters as food on the table matters. It is this hallucination that students hunger for the power to be first, to be in positioning to have the freedom to have enough to survive. It is with this process that students steal not in a place of self-actualization but in the stage of security. The lower stages of Maslow’s hierarchy reminds the student that ethics are not an evolution until self-actualization is present. Until then, the doors of extinction is evident that the student who runs a race to beat time, scarcity and extinction, positions their mind with one conclusions, survive. Whether it is a hallucination of the mind that falsifies its position to survive, it is nonetheless a real threat and fear. For the mind cannot separate the differences between a fake reality from a real one. It is the mind that commands the student to steal if the mind is starving for security. Maslow did an excellent job in explaining the senses and its approaches to surviving in triggering strategies to meet its needs. Nonetheless, it does not matter if ethics arrive in the building due to the one conclusion that humanity must survive its own devastation and illness of the mind.
It is with these steps of progress that the mind is fully aware of its positioning by the capitalist controlled environment to push the agenda of exploitation and commerce through bargaining and cheap labor. This is the domino effect in the education system to produce intellectual properties that are produced by starving students. The question is the next generation of starving students. Most students who starve create, but those students who are mentally misguided, starve from ideas. These students must steal to survive their own positioning in their educational system. It is this process that capitalist create in the labyrinth of exploitation by setting up rules and processes that infect the mind with the illusions of elimination. The student must create a stage for life or death, and sometimes, the mind create strategies of theft, to survive its own death. (Collins, 2000) It is this process that ethics do not matter. It is this process that Maslow states that a society cannot judge or classify humanity as criminal intent if it is based on security and survival. Darwin states this same evolution of our DNA that humanity cannot resolve conflict based on genetics that are not matured or evolved. Therefore, how can a society demand ethics if self-actualization or group actualization never show up to game day. It is with this calculation and analysis that humanity cannot practice ethics or even entertain ethics until they fully evolve and transform from the state of survival and security to self-actualization and group actualization. It is with this humanity that must arrive in holistic health first before we can entertain ethics as part of social collection and consciousness.
Finally, ethics as to plagiarism is nothing more than asking a bear not to eat fish, and a lion not to eat a deer. Before these animals walk away from eating their next meal, they must arrive in their own transformation first by completely evolving of eating enough fish and deers to choose another selection of meals. Until then, the address to eating fish and deer must never present itself as an option. Therefore, students cannot be ethical if they are living in a society that have a normalcy of exploitation as a general practice. A student cannot evolve pass their own environment. Their environment must evolve before they are able to evolve. This claim is built on the underground railroad approach into research that ethics for anti-slavery did not happen until immigrants who were slaves, knew of slavery in its highest degree, became residents in the United States. These ex-slaves immigrants had power and was able to set the slaves free. The environment changed not because the rules changed, but the immigrants that came to the United States had endured and lived through the same fate as the slaves in the United States, and became allies. This process changed the history of the States. The demands of black slaves did not create change until their free allies remembered their own slavery in the process. Ethics is not rules. Ethics is empathy. (Collins, 2000) Ethics do not matter until people are able to self-actualize and so a community group actualizes the case as empathy and not another system to control a situation that creates a dividing line of who should and who should not be part of the scarcity and capitalistic notion of power and protection in the lines of security and survival.
