Why to Buy Consignment Shop Clothing
Consignment clothing stores can offer a lot of pleasure to the casual shopper. Consignment clothing is often cared-for clothing that hasn’t yet outgrown its usefulness, even if its original owner may have outgrown it.
An eco-friendly alternative to malls, buying resale clothing saves on production energy being spent, as consignment items are being re-used and may be able to replace the resources that would be needed otherwise to make it new. Consignment shops save the consumer money, as the clothing is deeply discounted when compared to retail prices. The money being spent also goes right into the hands of a local business owner with a percentage going to the original owner as well. So while you’re being thrifty, buying on consignment really makes a lot of sense for everybody.
What to Know Before You Go
All consignment shops are not made equally. At their worst, resale stores only reward you with ill-fitting, stained and rejected clothing that reeks of stale sweat. I’m happy to report that I’ve been shopping the consignment shops in Greenwich, NY for years and that’s not what you are going to find here. There are differences among the three consignment stores located along on Main Street in Greenwich, NY, however.
Penny Wise Shoppe
89 Main Street, Greenwich, NY
Open for 20 years, the Penny Wise Shoppe has a concrete following. Women of all ages and from miles away put the Penny Wise Shoppe on their list of destinations to visit while in Greenwich, NY. Scrupulous about what they will accept on consignment and resale in their shop, the Penny Wise Shoppe offers name brand women’s clothing at mostly reasonable prices. Decorated with many vintage hats, posters and antiques, the store is warm and inviting. Downstairs there are a variety of home goods and several racks of discounted clothing. Multiple rooms ensure that they carry a large variety of consignment clothing, shoes and accessories, often arranged by type, size and color.
There are several things to consider while at the Penny Wise Shoppe in Greenwich, NY. First, it is only women’s clothing, nothing for the husbands or kids, so you will often see them sitting on the bench outside with the strollers or anyone that cannot make it through the tight spaces and steep stairs. Some prices do seem a bit high for resale clothing, so tags do need to be checked if you are on a thrifty budget. Many of the jeans are in European sizing and the fit of the clothing is often a bit different than expected so be prepared to try everything on in the one fitting room. Located on the main floor and with slats in the door, privacy isn’t paramount but is sufficient.
Nikki’s Country Closet
69 Main Street, Greenwich, NY
Located next to the laundry mat on Main Street in Greenwich, NY, Nikki’s Country Closet is a convenient consignment shop to stop into that feels like a year-round yard sale. You never know what you are going to find on consignment. Name brand clothing is hung alongside discount items and priced much the same. While the atmosphere is sparse, the prices are really cheap, mostly under $5 for an item, with many $1 sales throughout the year. They carry a little bit of everything; with toys, women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, accessories, and household goods at resale prices, I can usually find something to buy at this consignment shop.
Closed on Sundays and Mondays and weekday hours that don’t begin until 10 or 11 am and an almost invisible online presence, it’s important to call ahead if you are planning on stopping by and are unsure of their hours. Finding their phone number is challenging as they often aren’t listed under consignment, resale and thrift shops in the area, but I’ve included contact information here and if you are able to stop by, it’s a good place to spot a bargain.
135 Main Street, Greenwich, NY
Newest to Main Street in Greenwich, NY is Penny’s Exchange Consignment and Thrift Shop. With an early opening March 16, 2014, Penny’s Exchange is aiming at young adult shoppers. Still in its infancy, they carry high quality, stylish name-brand clothing at very low prices and do fill a gap that was left between the two previous stores. With only a small selection on hand, it is easy to quickly browse their resale inventory and to be amazed by the seemingly crisp newness of their consignment items.
Since space isn’t yet an issue, Penny’s is able to carry fluffy prom dresses which are often rejected by other consignment shops. They already have worked with a local seamstress, so buying second-hand doesn’t have to mean compromising fit. They have men’s and women’s clothing and a small selection of footwear and home accessories currently available on consignment but hope to expand to offer children’s items and a greater variety of items to choose from. New consignment items are posted on their regularly updated Facebook page and they are open throughout the weekend.
Whatever your style, need or budget, consignment shopping is giving people a good reason to stroll down Main Street in Greenwich, NY.
