My long term boyfriend and I received a phone call from a friend in March of 2011 and at that time we had no idea how much it would change our lives. Our friend was calling to ask if we could take in a yellow lab puppy. The thought of getting a dog really never crossed our minds seeing as we still were living at my boyfriend’s parent’s house but we couldn’t resist taking a look at this pup. Our friend brought her over, she was tiny and you could tell she was only a couple months old herself. He then explained to us that she had belonged to his neighbor that shared his duplex and that they had been abusing her, they would leave her outside all day with no leash, food or water, even when they were home. He explained to us that he had watched them throw her up the stairs and into the house multiple times. The owners of the puppy were eventually evicted out of that duplex and asked our friend to take the dog, so of course he did without a second thought, he just didn’t want the pup to live in that kind of environment. Our friend had a job that required him to be out of town a lot, so he thought he would ask us to take her in.
The second we laid eyes on her we fell in love. We immediately said yes and named her Nala after The Lion King! Growing up my family always had a dog so I somewhat knew what to expect… but my parents did all of the puppy training back then and I had never had a lab before. We were a little nervous when it came to training Nala, we weren’t sure if we wanted to go ahead and sign her up for classes or just go ahead and try it ourselves. Thankfully, she is super smart and we were able to teach her all the simple commands ourselves, she learned them so quickly! I’ve always heard that labs are very energetic and rambunctious and shortly found out that this statement could not be any more true. When my boyfriend and I leave for work she usually just lays on our bed all day until we get home but the second we do she is crazy happy and ready to play all night long.
Nala is around the age of 2 now and she is a blessing in our lives. We haven’t had any issues with her whatsoever. Labs are such loving family dogs. She loves to cuddle and she doesn’t care who you are or where you are sitting, she will make room right on your lap. She gets along with other dogs very well and we have no issue with her barking excessively. She is a healthy puppy and if you’re in the market for a family dog, a yellow lab would be my top recommendation and if you have the chance to rescue a puppy, please do!
