I have struggled with my weight for many years and tried a lot of different diet and weight loss plans. A few years ago I got on the scale and was shocked by the number. I decided it was time to make a change, so I started researching my options.
I downloaded a calorie counting app onto my iPhone and started tracking how many calories I consumed every day. At first I didn’t worry so much about staying with my calorie limit; I just tried to be faithful about logging everything I ate. The convenience of having it right on my phone, which was with me at all times, is what made this method successful for me. If it wasn’t that convenient I am afraid I wouldn’t have stuck with it.
I started reading and educating myself on nutrition, and slowly adopted a vegetarian diet. This instantly eliminated a lot of fast food and junk that I had been regularly consuming. I also completely eliminated alcohol for about 6 months. Counting calories gave me a new perspective on portion size, and the nutrition value of foods. The app had almost every food imaginable, so I didn’t have to guess about calories or nutrition value, I could just enter it into my daily totals. There was also a section where I was able to enter in my own recipes and calculate the nutrition value and calories per serving.
Within the first month I had lost almost 15 pounds. I was really motivated to keep going, and to start adding some exercise to my routine. Within the first 6 months I had lost 60 pounds. After that the pounds didn’t fall off quite as quickly, but I was regularly going down in dress sizes and my physical fitness was improving by leaps and bounds.
The more weight I lost, the less calories the app allowed me to eat, so I found myself exercising more in order to earn back some calories! I joined the local Y and started going at 5 am every morning and doing 30-45 minutes of cardio, plus at least 30 minutes of strength training before work every day.
By the time 18 months had passed, I lost 112 pounds and dropped 10 dress sizes. I had energy like I hadn’t experienced in years, and I was in the best shape of my life. Losing weight helped combat my anxiety, and totally eliminated a chronic back issue I had dealt with for years.
After a while I let my guard down and stopped being vigilant with using the app, and sure enough, I gained weight back. I need the accountability of entering all the food I eat to even help me maintain. I plan to use the app to help me take it back off agin, because it worked so well for me the first time.
