I am a woman who’s over fifty, and not to toot my own horn, but you would never assume it. It’s not like I go over and above to take care of my skin, but let’s just say (in my opinion) I’ve been blessed. I recently had a conversation with a work acquaintance and we were discussing children. In the event of the conversation I mentioned my son. “How old is your son?” She inquired. When I told her he had just turned forty. She was shocked and stood glaring at me in disbelief. You would have thought she’d seen a ghost. “No way,” she said, while trying to suppress her state of astonishment. “I didn’t think you were much over forty, yourself.” Being a woman of color is a huge plus when it comes to aging skin. Firstly, African American skin has tendency to be oily, which keeps it supple and moisturized thus preventing the appearance of wrinkles. Secondly, having a darker complexion discourages the urge to lie in the sun, therefore averting direct exposure to the threat of skin damaging UV rays. While, having those advantages is beneficial; it still requires some care and attention to keep the skin looking fresh.
Excuse the intent of sounding cliché but age is just a number. It’s really about the way you look and feel. Regardless of age, you should always strive to be your personal best. Keeping that fresh, youthful look can be a challenge. Especially, when trying to maintain a family, work, and other obstacles life may bring your way. However, setting aside just a few minutes a day for yourself can make a world of difference. Most importantly, find out what type of skin you have. Is it dry, oily, or a combination? Then, research and experiment with different products, both natural and marketed, until you find one that works for you. With so many beauty products on the market there’s bound to be a least one that will suit your needs. My skin is basically oily but can dry out, depending on the weather. Whereas, I don’t have to concentrate on a lot of maintenance, I still retain a daily skin care regimen. Here are my three easy solutions for keeping that age defying complexion.
1. Every morning I wash my face with a pore minimizing cleanser. It deep cleans and exfoliates leaving my face feeling refreshed as well as giving it an even toned appearance.
2. Drinking lots of water. You’d be surprised how effective drinking water is on clearing up your skin. I try to drink at least four 16 ounce bottles a day. I usually stop at the local mini market on the way to work and purchase just one bottle and then fill that at least four times within my 8 hour workday. Not only is it good for my skin – it keeps me hydrated and feeling alert.
3. Once or twice a week I massage a drop or two of vitamin E oil over my face and neck. It gives a nice polished look and makes my skin feel so smooth and soft.
Please note, this is not a recommendation; this is just what works for my skin type. In addition, I try to get plenty of sleep, watch my diet, and exercise whenever possible; even though, in all honesty, a brisk walk is more my definition of exercise. If you’ve never been complimented for not looking your age, truthfully speaking, it feels great. So, why not give yourself the love you need and take care of the skin you’re in. It’s really amazing at how just a few minutes a day can make you beautiful.
